excuse me, my name is jake and have you heard of Pixelfed or Loops?

They are like Instagram and TikTok without fascism and data mining.

Instead of Instagram: https://pixelfed.org

Instead of TikTok: https://joinloops.org

You can host your own, spread the woof.

What I started with vs What I submitted to the App Store.

Thanks for the feedback, can't wait for this to go live on the App Store 🚀

I still get a few offers to sell Pixelfed every month.

We're not for sale. 💅

Pixelfed isn't just a project.

It's an ecosystem.

Six side projects. One mission: a better social web.

I just asked ChatGPT "what is the most popular alternative to instagram?"

I can't believe Pixelfed is mentioned so prominently, like right along side TikTok!

You love to see it! (I know we hate AI, but people do use it for questions like these, and for a member of the fediverse to have such a prominent inclusion is the point)

I can't wait for the next surge of people, we're almost ready for the next million 🚀

You may have noticed the new Pixelfed app autoplays videos in feeds and pauses them as they go out of view, this was really tricky to implement, but, I also added a setting to disable video autoplay in Settings -> Content Preferences.

I copied the big players and used a blurred background with a fixed aspect ratio player to limit height so they look better without any black bars, and muted videos audio by default, until you tap the unmute button.

You have control over this though 🤘

The new Pixelfed app handles video uploads much better, and we're working on a custom optimization library to improve support further.

If you upload a video that exceeds the max file size limit, you will see a trim segment bar that will limit the length, and you can drag it to the segments you want to share.

We're also going to increase the max upload limit for video, improve backend transcoding and support new codecs for higher quality support with reduced file size.

Stay tuned 😉

Pixelfed DMs are now working as expected!

We hide messages from accounts you don't follow in the Requests tab*, and you can also hide conversations in the Hidden tab.

* - You can opt to allow messages from strangers in Settings -> Manage Account -> Filter Direct Messages

#pixelfed #dms

Pixelfed Group Chats have arrived, you can message 10+ accounts* and even send photos!

It's compatible with Mastodon, GotoSocial, Pleroma, Loops and many other software!

Available now on our new mobile app ✨

* - Limits vary by server

Just wanna say how proud I am to be a part of this, and how I couldn't do this without the encouragement and support from you, the fediverse.

I used to dream of building my own social network platform while I was fixing cars, a decade ago, and now I'm responsible for one of the most popular alternatives to Instagram!

Never stop chasing your dreams, they can come true ❤️
