Just seen the word ‘orchestrated’ spelled ‘orcastrated’ and I may never recover.

@CiaraNi Morning, pet! 😉

@CiaraNi Not that I expect you to know all Danish writers just because you’re Danish but do you know Helle Helle? I’m reading a novel she wrote called They, and it’s so good. I’d never heard of her but I bought it as a plus-one on Vinted, and I’m so glad I did.

@idzie Did you see this exciting photo I posted yesterday? https://beige.party/@arratoon/116568163977462172

Update on running/falling injury: it only hurts when I: a) move; b) breathe.

On the upside can commend the wonders of Elastoplast Second Skin plasters.

@skinnylatte Hello. Because I think you might be the person to ask, what’s your favourite way of making tempeh, if you do?

I tend to grate it and frizzle it in some oil, add tomato purèe and gochuchang or similar, touch of maple syrup, then have it in wraps, but I’d love some different ideas?

@idzie “OMG! It’s a fox!!” 😉 https://lgbtqia.space/@alice/115673971697320267

@MamaLake Do you know this band? Nice Thai shoegaze. https://aus.social/@cos/115581100282909236

Watched Tampopo (1985) for the first time today, and it’s not what I expected, but I guess nobody expects a Japanese Western about ramen do they? It’s terrific, anyway. #Films #Movies

There’s a Cartier jewellery exhibition on at the V&A in London at the moment. On my shelves I have this very good biography of the Cartiers, but one of my favourite stories in the book is about flying machine pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont. He would fly his hydrogen-filled rugby-ball-shaped air vehicle along the streets of Paris.

The book says: “The famous competition involved flying eleven miles from Paris's Parc de Saint-Cloud to the Eiffel Tower and back again in under thirty minutes. One of Santos's early attempts in the summer of 190I had almost ended in disaster when his dirigible started to lose hydrogen. Much to the horror of his adoring fans looking up at him from the pavements below, Santos had crashed into the side of the Hôtel Trocadéro and had to be rescued by the fire brigade. Fortunately, he had survived unscathed, but his dirigible was declared irreparable. Santos immediately ordered the construction of a new machine so he could try again, and by autumn that same year, he had succeeded. The problem this time, though, as he explained to Louis, was that the Deutsch de la Meurthe was a race against time, and yet it was impossible to check his time while flying. Looking at his pocket watch required taking his hands off the controls. He simply couldn't risk that, not after the last crash.
Cartier's pocket watches were popular among fashionable men in the French capital. Flat and well proportioned, they fit smoothly into one's waistcoat and felt reassuringly solid in one's hand. But as Louis considered his friend's predicament, he started to imagine something just as stylish but even more practical. If he were to combine a smaller watch face with some kind of elegant built-in wrist strap, Santos wouldn't need to move his hands from the flying machine's controls.”

And that’s how the wristwatch was invented.

Just listened to lovely segment by @meljoann while doing the washing up. 😉 https://fosstodon.org/@obbardc/114393583774522805

Selling some Bang & Olufsen landlines and answering machines on Vinted. Lowered the price to £23. Someone offers a paltry £14. Derisory! Thinking of making a counter-offer of £14,000.

@skinnylatte @TheBreadmonkey Hang on, what?!?! 🐙

And… start the day pissed off, having received an email from Discovery+ that says its procycling coverage is being subsumed into TNT, which means it'll now go from £6.99 a month to… £30.99!! Get to fuck.

#running First competitive half marathon today. It went really well. Really cold but no wind or rain, which made it easier. Managed to rein myself in for the first third, then pushed on a bit, and went all out at the end. The finish line was on a running track, so it was like the running equivalent of doing Paris-Roubaix.

The Return – Crushingly dull telling of Odysseus’ return to Ithica. I bailed after 40 minutes and watched a Louane live show on French TV.

North by Northwest – So good. The suit! Martin Landau! Trains! (Eva Marie Saint is now 100, you know.)

How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies – A really stupid translated title for this poignant Thai drama that evokes the likes of Kore-eda’s Still Walking, as a grandson connives to inherit his grandmother's house by helping her out in her last days. Great performances in a film that is somehow marketed as a comedy in the UK, and, while it has funny moments, will have you moist of eye by the end.

The Order – Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult excel in this based-on-true-life story of an FBI agent trying to foil a white power gang in the US. The tension ramps up but, sadly, the film descends into cliché in the last 20 minutes, which is really disappointing.

Does anyone know of a bakery that delivers pasteis de nata within the UK, not just local or pick-up? I mean one wise series you have used, not just Googled; I can do that myself. Thanks

@liztai It might not be your thing but have you seen Wong Kar Wai’s TV series, Blossoms Shanghai? It hasn’t come out yet over here in the UK. I know it was screened in China last year but I’m not sure about the rest of Asia.

So today I find out that next year’s Tour de France will be the final one that ITV will be able to broadcast in the UK because Warner Bros/Discovery+ has the exclusive European licence from 2026-2030.

And now I read that this week’s episode of Open Book on BBC Radio 4 will be the final one ever, after 25 years.

Woke up early this morning, probably because I knew I had to go to the doctor, and didn’t want to be late. In the end I got there early – a week early. 🙄
