To the person who suggested putting an emergency mylar blanket over the window (my apologies, can't find you comment anymore), wow that worked well. The indoor temp dropped 4C in 15 minutes, and that was with no direct light aimed at the window. I'm surprised that extent of solar energy was coming through. Nice hack, and one that is easy/cheap to do.

Edited to add: I always thought those blankets are opaque, so expected the effect to be like a blackout curtain. But it turned out they are more like a tinted car window. The amount of light is notably reduced, and the residual light bleeds through with an orange tint. But when there's light outside as backlight, the view across the street is still clear and detailed -- just darker. At night it's effectively opaque. (Though don't make any assumptions re privacy since now the interior is what would be backlit.)

…I spent today finalising a core page design for handover to production. It has (for me) quite a lot of JavaScript enhancement in it.

The page works just fine without JavaScript (2 forms that post, no content hidden that expects JavaScript to have run).

The 20 or so functions in it progressively enhance and minify to a footprint of 15 KB.

It is not hard to do things right, folks.

Unless, of course, you’re using a bullshit engine to write code for you 🤦‍♂️

The cargo bike is easily the best purchase we've done.

Not only because it allows us not to own a car but it's just convenient.
Never needing refueling, parking or having to sit in a traffic jam.

There's a really great point in this post from May: https://davekarpf.beehiiv.com/p/what-sort-of-ai-bubble-are-we-in (h/t Second Breakfast) that our estimation of the demand for AI is based almost entirely on a market that assumes the cost is effectively $0. Adjust the price to something that's actually profitable (or even just break-even), and a lot of that demand will evaporate. Which we're beginning to see now.
