Had a really terrific evening with my little brother in law last night. We get on so well and it's so nice to go and hang out in male company that isn't sports or booze related but just an easy night. If you're ever looking for alternatives, I strongly recommend Turkish spots. Never even really occurred to me before but of course it's where all the cool young Black people go out on a Saturday night because there's a higher contingent of Muslims? So semi outdoor music and food places where you can have shisha and aren't primarily geared towards alcohol. Extremely lovely vibes. Feel like I've discovered something that will make a material difference in my life. Increasingly people are cutting out alcohol and it's been challenging finding out what that means for their / our relationship, when so much historically has been based around the drinking culture in the UK. So I absolutely love that we can pivot away from that and still go to slightly edgy bar-vibe places, and partake in ridiculous coffee and shisha to still feel 'vicey' but ultimately remove the alcohol element. They also sell beer there and I saw some people have one or two, so we said we'd get all the brothers down there for a night out as it would be a very unifying environment, giving everyone what they need. I also imagine would be great for the meat eaters aswell.

So we went to this place for 'pre-match' and was going to wander up to try and blag our way into a social club after (I reckoned we could pretend to be members and it would be less messy than a pub) but it turned out this Turkish place was showing the football anyway and also had a belly dancer! Something I didn't know I needed. All football matches should involve belly dancers somehow. Can we somehow have a match with a team of belly dancers? I feel like I've said belly dancers too much. Is that the right expression or is that sexist?

TLDR - turns out I can watch the football sober as long I replace beer with Turkish coffee. Had about 8 pints.

* Importance (and mock importance), not proper nouns. it's "california", but if you're talking about a new rule at your workplace, it might be "The Policy".
* acronyms, although this one is inconsistent.
* names, but only when that user capitalizes their name. so the user SuPaMaN is capitalized that way, always. To not match their capitalization (including internal capitalization) is a terrible insult in Late IRC English

Linux uses far less RAM with Ubuntu+Xfce needing 650MB vs Windows 11 at 3-4GB. Three lightweight Linux releases in 2026 show that Linux ecosystem will work just fine on your old hardware.

Long explanation:

In order to keep work on the GtS codebase buzzing along, Tobi and Kim have to perform the increasingly expensive chore of maintaining their flesh temples by consuming calories, keeping warm and dry (or cool and wet, depending on the circumstances), doing routine bodily maintenance, and so on. Not to mention paying for electricity, internet, etc.

The money we need for all this has so far largely been provided to us by NLnet, the Dutch organization that funds a lot of fediverse projects (among other interesting things). NLnet's support has been of incredible value. Indeed, without it GoToSocial would not exist in its current form; we'd have long since had to get "real jobs" and GtS would have been relegated to being a side project.

However, due to the way that funding from NLnet works, we get paid only for delivering features that we scope out long in advance of when the funding period actually begins. In other words, we get paid every time we merge a big feature, details of which are agreed up to a year beforehand. However, this payout happens only intermittently, since big features take a large amount of time to write.

As everyone who works on code knows, there's more to a project than just writing headline features. We don't get paid for spending time doing things like maintenance, bugfixes, small bonus features, refactoring, triage, helping people in the Matrix chats, code review, and what have you. So, the intermittent way that we get paid means we have to juggle working on very important but unpaid "maintenance" stuff, alongside paid "feature" stuff when our bank accounts start to look worryingly moth-filled. This causes semi-regularly panics in the both of us, as neither of us are particularly resilient when it comes to dealing with financial pressures.

To make working on GoToSocial more sustainable, then, we want to be able to pay ourselves--the two most active devs--a basic monthly salary for all the work we do that isn't big headline features. This will allow us to commit time to unglamorous but vital maintenance chores, without the constant background worry that by doing so we're going to end up running out of money at a critical moment. To make this happen, we need your help!

Thanks to all our donors on OpenCollective and Liberapay, we'd accrued enough unspent money over the years to be able to pay ourselves 1,000 EUR each, each month, for the months of February, March, April, and May 2026 (plus a little bit here and there from Liberapay). I'm very annoyed at the emergence of the phrase "AI Anxiety," as if concerns about AI aren't legitimate and are merely the byproduct of critics' overexcited imaginations. This is The Grift, of course. Call critics "emotional" and "crazy."

Women are leading the charge against it and that's relevant! Likely because we stand to be harmed most by its embrace. But AI *is* a problem. That's undeniable. Even its proponents must admit it now & then. What's the exception are appropriate use cases. Pretending as if AI is not a valid issue to be anxious about it is insulting & disingenuous misdirection.

PRO TIP: if you want access to an academic paper, but you don't have a subscription to the journal, you can often get the paper for free by emailing one of the authors. There is nothing academics love more than people taking an interest in their nerd shit (affectionate).
