People might not even consider the default behaviour feasible to change. They may not even conceive of a different way to do this in the constraints they have learned from the default settings.

This is all on a sliding scale, and any individual setting may not be conceivable, to them, to change; they don't have a mental model for an alternative.

Even the heavy outliers though... few will change more than a handful of settings, because changing too many settings isn't portable.

How are most users going to learn about any individual setting? Answer: on average, they won't.

People don't usually like computers enough to try and learn these kinds of things. They like computers for what they enable them to do, and see learning the systems as a hurdle to be avoided _not_ an opportunity.

Even power users won't learn about a setting unless the consequence of the default annoys them enough to look into it.

Yet.. even still, both KDE and Heliboard have turned out to have features I didn't know about. Even as a user that changes settings in nearly every program I use.

I didn't know, for instance, that you can pin icons to the suggestion bar in Heliboard until I had to work on the UX for background gathering with Helium.

It took months of using KDE before I learned you can hide window decorations by default. (I recommend it. Set a modifier to interact with windows. Only close by shorcuts.)

We could try educating people about using software, but this is not going to work. This encourages either overwhelming the user until they learn, or removing functionality so learning is quick.

People shouldn't have to be learning how to use their software. Their software should be bending to accommodate user intent.

This is actually why I like KDE. It will bend to me in basically every way I care about. Heliboard is the same.

The other method to adapt software to people without them opening a settings menu, is to have settings adjust silently in the background based on usage patterns. This creates unpredictability in the UX, and needs to used sparingly. LLMs lean heavily on this. This is what made tik-tok take off. It's how onscreen-keyboards learn your vocabulary.

There must be a better way; I don't know what it is yet though. I welcome ideas! I think making software more accessible to 99% of users requires this.

I posit to you, that the reason people with low computer literacy are happy to use LLMs is LLMs provide an interface that tries to adapt to you _without_ changing any settings.

Until we start mastering the art of helping people adapt software to their needs without having to open the settings, people will not change any settings.

The easiest approach is to start having settings show themselves to people at the appropriate times. This can result in annoying popups though.

The primary reason people don't change defaults is they don't know how to... or that they can... or how to fix it if it breaks because they changed something.

This isn't people's fault; it is a discoverability problem. The reality is that all people have limited capacity to engage with option fatigue. Option fatigue can be overcome you when understand a space enough to have a solid opinion, but who really understands even 10% of the spaces they have to engage in to be part of society?

Here is a true story about modern appliances: they don't actually break down very often at all. More often, some operating tolerance is exceeded and an internal fuse pops.

If you have a voltage pen - $20 at a hardware store- and a screwdriver you can usually:

- Unplug thing
- Disassemble it
- Plug it back in and
- with the voltage pen find the place with current on one side of it and not the other.

Then, unplug it again, pull that part and look up its tiny part number.

Fuses are cheap.
