Getting the solar installed soon and need to work out what import/export tariff would be best. The difference can be huge but it looks like which one is best depends a lot on my very specific usage.

Does anyone know of any simulators that will help me work it out?

Weird experience. I was driving slowly through an automated gate when for all the world it felt like I’d hit a bollard. Car stopped hard.

I got out, nothing. No bollard, no damage. Mystery.

On the way out I noticed that the movement of the metal gate was confusing the car’s sensors, making it think it was close to a moving truck. On the way in it must have slammed on the brakes thinking there was about to be an impact.

Modern cars are weird, man.

500-mile round trip in the EV complete. No real charging frustrations, except that I’m hyper-aware of mileage and where I need to top up in a way that I’m not with a petrol car.

Most of the time when charging, it’s will-I-have-enough-time-to-pee-and-grab-a-coffee fast.

But I’ve already learned fast chargers aren’t guaranteed to be at their fastest rate - or working - so a charge stop could take up to 3 or 4 times longer than planned.

Listening to yesterday’s (April 21st) edition of The Rest is Science and it has a really great discussion about why you can’t use logic and facts to change people’s minds. Really worth a listen.

I’m looking for a cheap handheld console to keep the kids entertained on long car journeys without internet. Ideally very robust with a long battery life, doesn’t need to play the latest and greatest.

Any recommendations? I hear the Powkiddy V90s is ok…

Another day in the Unreal mines

90% of doing things in Unreal is working out how to do them in Unreal. About half of that is digging through the engine source code trying to work out how something works because they have no documentation.

Help! I need a programming environment that will let me quickly hammer out some ideas. Mostly drawing to a 2D canvas and some basic procedural generation algorithms.

Is Godot good for this? Processing?

I want something with as close to 0 learning overhead as possible. The idea is that I can prototype and noodle on stuff quickly without the baggage of Unreal, but I’m learning so many new things at the moment I can’t really face another thing to learn.

In the supermarket and they’re busy packing the Christmas food away and please can you just not? It’s been full-on stress up until this point, a few days to enjoy nice things is all I ask.

Dude, if environmental protestors had that much power we would have seen mass investment in wind and solar - like they were demanding - 40 years ago and seen the economies of scale we see today decades earlier.

But we didn’t get that. We actually got more nuclear investment while also doubling down on fossil fuels for a good couple of decades.

Meanwhile solar and wind power bimbled along with relatively niche appeal until a series of breakthroughs made it a viable mass power source. SURPRISE!

I’m not anti-nuclear but…

…I’ve seen a lot of anti-renewable pro-nuclear rhetoric online recently. People who passionately believe that solar and wind is a diversion and supporting their adoption has slowed the adoption of the one true way, nuclear power.

That no-one has done more harm to the climate than environmental protestors promoting wind and solar and protesting nuclear power.
