Anyway, I’d like to think I’m making good use of it. Today I did laundry, cooked a meal, took care of some bank stuff, exercised, signed up for the YMCA, put away the cold-weather clothes, went to the local farmers market I’ve never been to before because I’m usually working during that time, bought strawberries and rhubarb, played an episode of Dispatch, posted events for my dance practice group, uninstalled a lighting fixture that went out, started installing a new one (but need to buy parts), and I just downloaded Go.

I’m changing jobs and decided to give myself a very expensive three-week vacation in between. I am not doing a fancy trip to the other side of the world, I am in fact mostly staying home, it’s just expensive in that I’m not getting paid for those three weeks.

For any project that relies on collaboration, it doesn't matter how smart an individual is if they drive other people away. The underlying technical points might have a lot of merit, but I would not want to use a tool that would have me interact with people like that that would berate me for filing a bug. I would certainly not want to contribute code to such a project.

I am amazed how many people confuse "being a dick" with "having a personality". I hate the "asshole genius" trope because all it's done is convince assholes that they are geniuses, and non-geniuses to think the way to appear smart is to be an asshole.

If you can't communicate effectively ("play well with others"), you're not nearly as smart as you think you are. Smart people know how to get shit done, and the only way to get shit done at a scale beyond what any given human can do on their own is collaboration. And no one wants to collaborate with an asshole.

Thanks everyone for the thoughts on transporting large round foods by bike. I felt silly after doing an internet search recently and discovering that there’s a thing called a “pizza rack” that you can mount to the front of your bike. Maybe I’ll get one of those… #BikeTooter

Okay, today’s finally tipped me over the edge. I should do something about this. I’m trying to get a decorated cake across Cambridge. I’d normally bike, but I’m catching two buses due to needing to carry the cake. How does one transport cakes, pies, and pizzas on a bicycle? #BikeTooter

I’m working on internal procedures for my community organization on how to handle incident reports, and I want to include resources for people who have had traumatic experiences. I just realized… I can do a quick search to get the local resources for assault and crisis centers, but how do I know if any of them are good?

Following a 3-year hiatus, I’m back in the space industry again. I’ve used https://www.space-track.org to get TLEs in the past, but this is the first time I’ve needed to do more with it. I’m not trying to throw shade at anyone, but I’ve been trying to figure out how to get conjunction data messages, and I feel like I am lost in the wilderness. The API is surprising, and there seems to be documentation for two different definitions of that message. It’s wild.

There’s a lesson here, perhaps, about the tangled relationship between what is •typical• and what is •correct•, and what it is that LLMs actually do:

When medical professionals ask medical questions in technical medical language, the answers they get are typically correct.

When non-professional ask medical questions in a perhaps medically ill-formed vernacular mode, the answers they get are typically wrong.

The LLM readily models both of these things. Despite having no notion of correctness in either case, correctness is more statistically typical in one than the other.
