In this paper we improve the bound on the value of Dylan's constant 𝐷. This value, first defined by Dylan [1963], is the number of roads that a man must walk down.

We briefly recap the history of Dylan's constant. Although it is not a priori obvious that a man must walk down a finite number of roads, a relatively elementary nonconstructive proof that 𝐷 is finite, using the pigeonhole principle, was quickly given by Yarrow, Stookey and Travers [1963]. The first explicit bound, a stack of exponentials of height 5, was found by Wonder [1966]. This bound was significantly improved by Baez [1976] to 𝐷 ≤ 420 using methods of higher category theory. Although this bound remains the best known currently, Adams [1980] conjectured that 𝐷 = 42 based on extensive computer calculations.

Dada writes, "Nobody adopts AI for the sake of adopting AI." I'm not so sure; it seems an economical explanation for many an AI adoption target set by CEOs or ministers.

Still, I guess she's right. You can't convince voters by paraphrasing Douglas Adams' Prosser: "What do you mean, why's it got to be built? It's an AI data center. You've got to build AI data centers."

But Prosser's argument is at least honest and spends no taxpayer euros on making up a Vision for bulldozing our home.

The closest she gets to that positive vision is posing the question: How to tell humanity the story of "jobs changing for the better and new opportunities being created?" The question is left hanging.

There's a whiff of vision over this line: "Sovereignty is crucial … because a Europe with agency can keep AI safe."

Can it? In special economic zones so deregulated that US firms would flock there?

In any case, that's still "avoiding the merely worse" of unsafe AI.

There's nothing special about the appeal to FOMO, or the idea that the job of government now is to sell their constituencies on AI. (I recall Rishi Sunak doing much the same in the same column a while back.)

What's extraordinary is the candid acknowledgment that it's all downsides and that the author cannot name an upside – beyond avoiding the "merely worse" of missing out. The author is "a general partner at Visionaries Club," but offers no vision. Just tells Europe it has to, stat.
