right so i got the PowerBook G4. problem is that the 4 key is extremely sensitive and was actually firing repeatedly. i took the 4 key off and it stopped. the slightest touch of the rubber dome thing makes it fire the 4 key. any ideas on how to fix it?
please boost this post, i don't want to use it without a proper 4 key!

Current plan for #Nix on Ubuntu and Arch:
- At the user-level, I've got a home-manager `home.nix` to declare user-only packages to install. I plan to sync this file between laptops using YADM (git, basically). Over time, I may look at Home Manager for managing some dotfile contents.
- At the system level, I plan to move more package installs from .deb/snap/pacman/brew/flatpak to Nix to help me sync packages cross distro/laptop. Also check this file into git and sync it via YADM.

Before, the Nix language syntax and some implementation details seemed like too steep of a learning curve, while I l had already learned Ansible for work.
But with some examples or a bit of AI to get bootstrapped, maintenance is largely the same and simple: add a new package to list of packages you want to install and run a command to activate it. 🧵
Here's a key benefit of using #Nix over #Ansible for managing my dev environment:
Nix-- usefully-- forces me to add the package I want to install to a config file that lists my installed packages, keeping the config file I share between machines in sync with what's actually installed.
And this is big-- if I remove a package from that file, it gets uninstalled on the next rebuild. Ansible doesn't uninstall software unless explicitly directed to do so.
Nix has rollbacks, Ansible does not. 🧵
To get all the software I wanted on Ubuntu, I was using mix of .deb files, brew, flatpak and even... snaps.
Everything that I could find via `brew` I could also find via Nix, so I was able to uninstall `brew` and simplify. Several snap-only packages on Ubuntu are available via the Nix package manager as well.
Whether using Nix as as a global package manager or via Home Manager, the packages don't conflict with stuff installed by Pacman or Arch. 🧵
By requirement, I use #Ubuntu for work, which lacks a lot of packages I'm used to on #ArchLinux but many of the same packages are available on #Nix and therefore can be installed on Ubuntu, either globally or locally via Home Manager.
As Nix / Home Manager also run on Arch, that's a win for cross-distro sync'ing between a work and personal laptop. Nix/home-manager works on macOS as well as many packages available for that as well! 🧵
Not NixOS, but Nix the package manager and in particular Home Manager, Nix's homedir manager.
My initial impression of Home Manager was that it would sort of completely take over your dotfiles, so that they are all converted into Nix syntax, for better or worse.
But on second look, I've learned that:
1. Home Manager can be used primarily, and only to install user-level packages and
2. Home Manager's Nixification of dotfiles is completely optional and be adopted incrementally. 🧵️

Previously I used #Ansible for packages and global config and YADM for local dotfiles.
YADM has worked well. It's basically git for $HOME so there's not much to learn and it's stays in sync.
My Ansible configs quickly and repeatedly drifted out of sync because it's to easy to install something manually and never go back reflect it in Ansible. Cross-distro, things get even hairier.

The simple rule of only allowing people in my address book to get through directly regularly backfires when I get a first call from a kid’s school, camp, or tech support calling my back. Any business calling me back, really. It’s a good rule maybe 95% plus of the time, but some of the remainder are important and time-sensitive.
