Just heard this morning that a second major #hospital in #Ottawa is significantly cutting #nursing staff. This is in a city where we already regularly see 10 plus hour waits in ER (not to mention a ridiculous shortage of family doctors). All due to budget cuts by the Conservative provincial government, which, like conservative governments everywhere, is devoted to privatizing #healthcare. Like many Canadians, I'm perfectly happy to pay a bit more in taxes to ensure that everyone can get the health care they need, but I'm am very much *not* happy when I see the care those taxes are meant to pay for being gutted.

Ah well. All the teams I traditionally support (plus Canada, which, obviously. . . .) are now out. I'll have to just watch with unbiased appreciation for the rest of this. #WorldCup

I have always loved and been fascinated by personal names, and the #WorldCup is a feast.

It's so interesting to watch teams like #Canada, where most of those playing are young and on the up, as opposed to watching older teams or players like #Belgium, #Croatia. The older teams are often more disciplined, which I find really impressive and enjoy watching. But the younger teams just have a completely different energy. Which I suppose is obvious, but it's still interesting. #WorldCup #Fedifc

All things being equal, I prefer games that do not feature the refs as a main character. #WorldCup

Great game so far - #Portugal's had most of the possession, but both sides are playing well, and there have been tense moments for viewers on both sides. Also, a lot less of the shirt-grabbing and actual body-grabbing that we've seen in some of these matches. #WorldCup #fedifc

One of the games my husband plays is a sort of fantasy #Americanfootball game, but it comes from a UK company, and I really doubt they even know what American football is. They call the field 'the pitch', which is at least understandable, but they also talk about deciding the game in #penalty shoot-outs. And I absolutely cannot fathom how penalty shoot-outs would even work in American football.

This is why I love #football - you can start out with a clear idea of which team is far more likely to win . . . but you never know what will actually happen. #WorldCup #fedifc

I saw no valid reason for that goal to be disallowed. Nobody touched the goalie, he just dived over. Like the announcer said, he was play-acting for the ref, and he got away with it. Incredibly annoying. #WorldCup #fedifc
