New neighbours moved in a few days ago, and they have 8 ENORMOUS draft horses!! I haven't met the people yet, but today the horses came to the fence line and said hi (and immediately lost interest when it was clear I had no treats for them).
Look how big they are!! My hand is tiny compared to this horse's nose!!! I hope I can be friends with these new neighbours and learn more about draft horses...may need to make some cookies tomorrow.

in one class i teach sometimes, i do a physical comedy routine where i bring in a heavy stack of publications & go through them one by one asking the students how much they think i got paid for them (journal articles: zero; books edited by other people, a free copy of the book; my own books, maybe enough to go out to dinner a few times, over years). by the end they're cringing hard and laughing at me but i think the point gets across. we also talk about the university libraries & $$
