My partner just tried putting her CV through some ATS checkers that use LLMs. Her name can be turned into a male name by deleting one letter. Doing so caused her score to jump 10 points.

Anyone using these tools for hiring is going to have some massive discrimination lawsuits in their future.

I’ve been working with computers for five decades. Some people view me as an “expert” in certain subjects.

And I can tell you that when I am learning a new technology I still feel like the dumbest newb on the planet. I make tons of mistakes. I go down stupid rabbit holes of my own making. I have tons of self doubt.

So give yourself some grace. Everybody goes through this phase. Take a deep breath. Believe that you can do this.

Oktober zusammen mit Hamburger Stadtteilinitiativen, Maker- und Hackerspaces und weiteren zivilgesellschaftlichen Organisationen aus der Region die ersten Digital Independence Days in Hamburg. Ihr und eure Gruppe seid herzlich eingeladen, euch aktiv zu beteiligen!

Am Wochenende vom 2. bis 4. Oktober gibt es diese und noch mehr Themen kompakt: Vorträge, Workshops und Austausch zwischen Interessierten. Neben dem praktischen “Wie” wollen wir auch über gesellschaftliche und politische Themen reden, wie z. B. den Einfluß von Künstlicher Intelligenz, oder die Digitalisierung von Stadt und Verwaltung in Hamburg.

Wir haben dazu den Kultur Palast Harburg (ehem. Rieckhof) als Location gewinnen können. Von Freitag Nachmittag bis Sonntag Nachmittag haben Besucher*innen die Möglichkeit, in Vorträgen und Workshops zu erfahren, wie sie sich unabhängiger machen können. Natürlich ist der Eintritt kostenlos.

Das Programm ist abgestimmt auf Menschen, die mehr oder minder spontan für ein paar Stunden vorbeikommen und “mal schauen” möchten.

I learned the other day, that I must assume MUCH less I know about the implications the "AI” bubble has when talking to others.

A good friend of mine, well educated, PhD in Psychology, is o/c aware of psychological issues caused by "AI”. She was completely unaware of the absolute reckless and exploitative behavior of the industry. I only noticed, b/c she was complaining about how expensive new notebooks are and was VERY surprised why this is the case.

For her “AI” was just a “free service”.
