It’s useful (but difficult!) to remember that we live in a bizarro world where the way companies generate profit for the people who run them is not actually by creating useful things, or by acquiring customers, or even by making revenues exceed costs…

…but rather by getting the people who have large amounts of investment money to be irrationally excited for a longer period of time than it takes to cash out.

Fellow europeans: which mail/calendar/contacts hosting service do you use?

Not interested in one that doesn't use open standards (which unfortunately includes Proton and Tuta). Not looking to self host. It brings more headaches than I have time for.

Decent web interface is a requirement (I find that nearly all mail clients suck).

Currently (happily) using Fastmail, but contemplating switching to something a bit closer to home when the contract time is up.

Kubernetes may be the biggest prank Google has ever played on the rest of the industry.

So much of the critical infrastructure that we rely on contains open source projects that are under-resourced and struggling. One (of many) ways to help these projects is by funding development and maintenance so that contributors can focus on this work, but times are tough. OSPOs are feeling the pinch, and it can be hard to justify continuing to fund open source projects. Measuring the impact of funding open source isn’t easy, and there is no one approach, so I just wrote this blog post to help you get started.

I am moving to a usage-based billing

Dear employer, I will no longer charger a flat monthly salary, instead I will move to token based billing. Included will be every token I receive as input, including but not limited to emails, slack messages, spoken words and mandatory multi-modal meetings that could have been emails. Included will also be output tokens in the form of code, documentation and small talk. Tokens will also be consumed by my internal monolog as I reason about problems.
