In a way I'm one of those developers. I was drawn to GNOME ecosystem when I saw how much effort was invested into renewing and modernizing the stack around the turn of the decade, with flatpak, GTK4, libadwaita, the HIG, etc.

I definitely wasn't the only one who jumped on the GNOME train back then, because it seems like the effort that has been invested into the platform is really paying off now with all these cool apps appearing.

This might just be my subjective experience, but it feels like GNOME app ecosystem is entering a new stage where the current modern tooling has been available for long enough, and a sufficient enough third-party developer culture has been established, that we are getting a wave of bigger and more ambitious apps than before.

As if the developers who published their first small libadwaita indie apps 3-4 years ago are now using that experience to build and support a new, more advanced class of projects.

also love that "cargo test" is built-in. (first time I've seriously done this in a project :P).

when a test fails I think "yes! that saved me another hour or two of debugging!" and I take a nap.

This isn't a new idea of course, many people have been working on this. I am just deeply disappointed by how some "Open Source" organizations basically just argue that "AI is here to stay and what can you do, don't exclude people who want to slop their way into your project" which really shows how limited their understanding of what all this open source infrastructure and code is about.

It's not about being able to download C files. It's about humane politics. About using technology to increase people's agency and wellbeing.

Here is a true story about modern appliances: they don't actually break down very often at all. More often, some operating tolerance is exceeded and an internal fuse pops.

If you have a voltage pen - $20 at a hardware store- and a screwdriver you can usually:

- Unplug thing
- Disassemble it
- Plug it back in and
- with the voltage pen find the place with current on one side of it and not the other.

Then, unplug it again, pull that part and look up its tiny part number.

Fuses are cheap.
