I first got into tinkering with hardware and software when I was 12 years old, a very formative period in a kid's life, and shaped me into the (lowercase "e") engineer that I am today. Much of what I learned during that time came from interactions on the period equivalent of the internet (dial-up bulletin boards with networked messaging systems), chatting with sysops and enthusiasts. If I had been banned from these interactions until I was 16+, I can pretty safely say that the outcome would have been significantly, life-alteringly different, and I doubt I would have the drive and the passion for this stuff that I still do 3 decades later.

This is not the solution! Banning users under an arbitrary age while not addressing the underlying issues that make social media platforms so harmful is like putting an used band-aid over a fresh wound.

I started contributing to Free Software projects when I was ~13. I was able to do that because I could create a GitHub account, I could use YouTube to watch programming courses, I could use StackOverflow to ask questions...

Instead of a blanket ban, we should make these platforms have sane defaults, non-addictive designs, transparent and healthy algorithms, and provide agency for parents to adequately control their kids' online activity.

We are living in 2026, and Instagram does not offer decent parental controls yet (!!)

Follow up: I hit a 400 download milestone for the model on Printables, which gave me half the points necessary to redeem for a spool of filament. Added to the points I already had from doing basic account setup, and I'm over the threshold. Free stuff and I'm only pushing a quarter of the traffic my model is seeing on Thingiverse.

This is apparently the new line for blaming companies for AI failures: you didn’t fully upload the brains of your senior people before firing them! You have to complete the extraction process first! Suck them dry, •then• discard them!

Machine learning does not actually work that way, but…in this FOMO-driven industry, anything goes to blame the customer.

The holes I added to make it easy for me to pop magnets back out with a tiny screwdriver bit are probably contributing to this. I'll probably just suppress those in the exported STLs for production and consider them a prototyping feature, but I can feel the need to design a compliant hole worming its way into my brain...

The magnets don't fit so snugly in *some* of the printed parts, so they wind up getting pulled out when you remove a stencil... which is disappointing to say the least. For now, I can keep them in place with a dot of super glue, but I think I'm going to have to design some "fins" or something like that to make the holes compliant. We're talking 2 slots out of ... I dunno, 48 or something? ... so it's not the end of the world, but I want the model to be bulletproof.

Edit: I forgot about the other half of the plates, so it's 72 slots and only 2 of them failed me.

I've designed it so that I'm able to print a 3x3 base plate or 9 stencils/textures on a single build plate in my P2S.
