The new 3D printer knows which filaments I have loaded. It knows the colors. I am scared. This thing is too smart. It makes my old beast look like a dinosaur.
(It only works with their branded filaments, but still… I assume there are RFID chips in the spools which are read by readers in the printer.)
I am so tired.
The new 3D printer I ordered should be arriving today. My daughter is SO excited about it. But all I can think is “oh great, another responsibility”.
A new work week spreads out in front of me. I can barely even think about dealing with it. This makes me feel guilty because my job isn’t all that hard, and I’m lucky to have it.
Having AuDHD (or is it “being AuDHD”?) would absolutely explain my increasingly frequent burnouts and shutdowns. But while an explanation and techniques to handle it are useful, I still need to live and earn and support a family in this godforesaken world.
Yesterday I learned my brother-in-law just up and quit his software development job because he was totally burned out, and now he’s just screwing around developing what he wants on his own terms. He could afford to do this because he lives alone with his cats and never does anything, so he has FIVE YEARS of money saved up.
We’re all aware that a whole lot of people of aren’t exactly feeling America’s 250th.
What’s actually *amazing* is how thoroughly you have to fuck up to make Americans look at an excuse to get drunk, eat garbage, blow stuff up, & praise ourselves & go:

This world needs business owners who legitimately care about their customers and their mission more than about maximizing profits. Who are more concerned with long-term stability, legacy, and reputation over short-term growth and resource extraction.
It is my understanding that these sorts of business leaders actually did exist once. I don’t know if that’s true; history is written by the victors, after all. But I do know that some brands once stood for something, and some companies actually cared about the wellbeing of their workers, at least to an extent.
We’ve seen such a race to the bottom over the past forty years that it’s hard to imagine such a world. I don’t know if such a thing is possible again. (Or if it was ever truly as prevalent as it seems it was, looking back.) But there has to be a way for us to bring trust and reputation back as a consumer guideline. There just has to be.

I was a total fucking idiot this morning and stabbed my palm with an X-Acto knife while stupidly trying to remove supports from a 3D print
Went to urgent care because it was deep, got a cleaning and liquid bandage
Then it started bleeding again two hours later
So back to urgent care, where they did way more liquid bandage and a big gauze bandage
That was eight hours ago
I’m allowed to remove it now but I am afraid of it bleeding again, so I’ll probably leave it on all night
Anyways the moral of the story is use a Dremel or hot knife to remove supports, not a fucking X-Acto knife

I didn't realize that the guy I was talking with about the internet in 1999 thought of this as a *problem* to be solved... not what made the internet awesome.
All along there have been people who see everything you love about the internet as an unfortunate design oversight, something to be fixed. And they've been working for decades to make it happen.
