My pre-ASCII art / pictorial typography / text art archive site is out now!

People have been making ASCII-like text art on letterpress for over 300 years, building pictures entirely out of metal type, ornaments, and rule. The practice has often been dismissed as "tasteless", "wasted effort" and "nothing to do with art", which is why I think it's gone largely undocumented. So, I've spent the last 8+ years collecting ~2500 of these works into an archive. Thanks to @adelfaure, who developed the site, it's now online for everyone to browse:

I've printed my ASCII art properly for the first time! My friend helped me to get the colours and the quality absolutely perfect. Really happy with the results!

I wanted to maintain the feeling of the original super-long ASCII-scrolls, so I made several prints at 21x200 cm. I also printed one with a more traditional ratio, using 600x160 text characters.

I showed these works together with Karin Iréne Andersson's patchworks, and they worked really well together. Text & textile, always united.

Stumpled on this ANSI by Viper in 1993. Good example of the carefree style of early ANSI. :)

Every 10 years I try to get rid of all the old computer stuff I have, that I don't use. I managed to find someone who wanted my 40 kg collection of computer magazines, and another one who wanted ALL my old hard- and software and books and so on.

It's ad to see how stuff breaks from just being in storage. I'm happy that they're getting some love again...

After 30 years or so, Razor 1911 has changed the logo in the nfo-files. And I made the new one. :)

This is a shot in the dark, but why not...
Way back in the mid 90s I briefly got really into MOD file music. There was a track I had that used a bunch of samples from The Crow.

A pivotal part of the song was the line "30 hours of pain, all at once, all for you."

Does anybody out there remember this and know what the song's name was?

A friend has been working on a generative music system that trains on C64 SID files. It's not great yet, but it's showing some good progress. It's open source, so you can use and modify it as you want. https://github.com/anarkiwi/preframr
