I wouldn’t say that coprolite is my top favourite fossil, but it’s certainly a solid number two.

@ascentale @uxMark @bikenite #bikenite A3, if I had to get rid of all bikes but one I’d keep the 95 Specialized Rock Hopper. It has a beautiful chro-mo steel frame, a super sturdy 3 x 7 drive train and bombproof 26 inch wheels. It makes an excellent gravel bike, a decent mountain bike, and a good bike packing bike. It sucks at fast paved road riding but I don’t do that much anymore because I really like to avoid cars and trucks. Parts are hilariously cheap.

Figured out how to strap a dolly to the back of my bike to be able to haul a big tent when needed

asking a developer who is providing you free software for even more free work is deeply disrepectful of their effort. You might want to consider offering to finance the changes you want to see.

So person A will say "I see X" and person B will say "Are you sure, I don't see anything like that". They are both right.

One aspect of retail we've forgotten after generations of conglomerated big box stores and subsequent online conglomeration is that of curation of products.

When you went into a family-owned hardware store in 1985, you got experts who chose products based on a balance of price and quality. Maybe they only had two kinds of hammers or one brand of bolts, but somebody selected those. There was some level of trust in what you were getting.

Now that labor is on us to filter from dozens of types and brands, based on reviews that are gamed by botnets, against manufacturers who change up the models yearly to dodge bad reviews. It's a race to the bottom because we don't have local curators who are personally invested in your returning to their store.

A local bike shop is trying to get camping regulations in NY state changed to make hike/bike camping as a group easier because the rules are currently written with only drivers in mind.

So ... I didn't know how to write about this yesterday when it happened, but I was napping at lunch in the crane when an automated alert on my phone woke me. It advised us of an imminent tornado, and to seek shelter immediately.

I looked over my shoulder to see a wall of weather coming at us, so I warned the rest of the job, weathervaned the crane, closed the windows, and put on my boots to prepare to climb down.

The wall hit us for a half hour with 80km/h sustained winds peaking at 105km/h, and torrential rain that flooded the area.

Here are some pics that I took, and some that other people took... in the long panorama I am in the downtown at far left. Shitting my pants in that tiny cab lol.

Biked through a farmers market this morning and the heat made the fish stand on the end of it all kinds of rank.

"People sometimes end up on obscure sites run by just... anyone. A page made by a local club is as easy to find as a corporate site."

I didn't realize that the guy I was talking with about the internet in 1999 thought of this as a *problem* to be solved... not what made the internet awesome.

All along there have been people who see everything you love about the internet as an unfortunate design oversight, something to be fixed. And they've been working for decades to make it happen.

In a shocking discovery, scientific #journal finds that people work better when actually paid for it.

In the six-month experiment, reviewers who within four working days delivered a report that their handling editor considered good quality were paid £220 per manuscript.

Paying reviewers not only led to faster first editorial decisions — an average of 5.5 working days, down from nearly 38 for unpaid reviews — but review quality, as judged by handling editors on the basis of helpfulness in making an editorial decision, went up.
