We are a winter country. People from warm places don't always get what that means. Historically, we have learned to work together and help one another -- even people we maybe don't like -- because the alternative was death. That's why I put on my coat in January when I see someone stuck in their car on the street in front of my house -- and watch three other neighbours come out at the same time. It's the same impulse that made the aboriginal people here teach the first European settlers how to survive here, what to eat, how to grow corn and beans, and how to brew spruce tea to prevent winter scurvy -- skills that made European settlement possible at all.

We have a lot of unpleasant history. But I still do believe in the dream of Canada that was presented in the late 60s -- a place where all different kinds of people could come together, share the best of what they came from, shed the worst, and make something new and better. We're not there yet, but I think we can get there if we keep trying.

The nativist trend we are currently seeing around the world is like a cancer -- dividing people into us and them, the deserving and undeserving. It can only make us weaker if we let it take hold here. We have to look out for one another, because that's the only way you get through a winter. Sometimes that winter is metaphorical, but no less deadly.
