In March I purchased 5 female-sexed chicks, looking very forward to having 5 new egg layers. As this one grew, I began to worry, trying to convince myself that she is just a particularly stunning hen.
This morning at sunrise we were awakened by a feeble, first attempt at cock-a-doodle-doo; missing a few syllables, but unmistakable.
Rats! “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch” or something like that.

There's nothing quite like the spectacle of watching baby egrets having their lunches up in the treetops. They are such gawky, gulpy little chickens! #EgretsIveHadAFew
Baby birds! My wife has a decorative lantern on the front porch, and some little wren decided it was a good place for a nest. We have lots of "gorilla hair" mulch in the front yard, so nesting material was abundant.
When the chicks first hatched, they were so tiny they were buried in the mulch. Now they're big enough they're easy to spot.
So cute!
I have told my kids and grandkids all their lives that life is like a roller coaster.
Up and down and back up again.
When it's fun you throw your hands in the air and make happy noises. When it's not fun you grab the rail and hang on because it will come out better on the other side. Sometimes we just chug around the track quietly in between the fun or not fun parts.
Our lives have been on the twisty, turny level 4 roller coaster with a side of cancer, evil politicians and pandemics for years now.
We have also had a side of love, endurance, the sweetest dog in these parts and family who would do anything for us.
Just plain luck too.
Today Summer is giving her pal a ride by squeezing herself under his legs while he sits. She lifts his feet off the floor and makes him laugh out loud. A roller coaster ride on the sofa.
An E ticket.
That's what keeps me going.
Waiting to throw my hands up and scream again.
Right around the corner.

@Nickiquote my mom (now 91) has had an iPad since the first iPads. She played Solitaire through to THE END about 5 years ago. No more winnable games left to play.
I had to uninstall/wipe and reinstall so she could carry on.
Dude. I went through my medical records to find the date of a thing and saw shit in there that’s just not true. Never happened. The medical AI is already hallucinating bullshit into our files. And who’s the doctor gonna believe, you or the computer? Ohhh fuck…..
