A bit of history here:

In a famous 2012 blog (https://archive.ph/rqwQW) post titled "Why we don't sell ads", the founders explained why they rejected advertising:

"Remember, when advertising is involved you the user are the product."

The post argued that they preferred charging users directly (at the time it was about $1/year) rather than relying on advertising.

This became WhatsApp's best-known slogan. Co-founder Brian Acton (https://www.redorbit.com/news/technology/1113051055/as-whatsapp-hits-430m-users-will-not-compete-with-snapchat-012114/) reportedly kept a note reading:

"No Ads! No Games! No Gimmicks!"

Jan Koum repeatedly cited this philosophy in interviews and public appearances before Facebook acquired WhatsApp.

In January 2016 (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/whatsapp-is-now-free-for-all-users/), WhatsApp removed its annual subscription fee and stated:

"We'll remove fees from the different versions of our app and WhatsApp will no longer charge you for our service."

WhatsApp also said it would not introduce third-party ads to replace the subscription fee.

In 2025, Meta announced (https://www.theverge.com/meta/688714/whatsapp-ads-rollout-change-app-meta) advertisements for the Updates tab (Status and Channels), while saying that personal chats, calls, and groups remain free of ads and end-to-end encrypted. This marked a departure from WhatsApp's long-standing "no ads" stance.

p.p.s. Just to clarify, there are good bots and bad bots. Report the bad bots, but don't report the good bots!

✅ Good bots *aren't* GenAI/LLMs. Good bots are labelled "automated" by the person who created them, so that people can see it is a good bot. Good bots do things like relay weather reports, play chess, post quotations from books etc.
