Mainstream news has largely shut out trans stories past courts coverage. So you'll see this decision happened or that one, but not the impact. In large part this is bc NYT has dominated what the coverage there is, and has repeatedly been shown to be biased against trans people.

On some level I think cis people assume if it was really bad there'd be an outcry.

The outcry re: ICE and immigration is (imo) still woefully short of the complete shut down we should be having to meet the severity of the moment, but people certainly are hearing about it.

I will say, though, that it is also true that I was in complete and utter privilege by having previously lived the sort of life where the need to write and write and write in the forlorn hope of convincing the mainstream to see me as a human being wasn't necessary.

There was a time, roughly coinciding with COVID, when I took a break from writing about the trans community. It felt like I was writing the same piece, over and over: I too, a lowly transgender, am also human.

Looking back, it was a luxury just to feel I could stop writing it.

The speech concerns are why I keep the cash, why I've gamed out worst case scenarios for crossing the border.

I'm so sorry. My kid is enby and I worry for them, and for all of you. We've helped two lovely trans girls get to Canada this last year, and joke we're part of the "underground railroad" but it's really not a joke at all. I'm tired of dealing with all the bigotry, misogyny and racism. I'm tired of these white men who think they can walk all over the rest of us. They won't, but I'm sick of having to fight for every scrap of dignity.
