Does ATProto count as a federated protocol? This is a genuine question. I'm actually not sure if ATProto is federated or not because I'm only familiar with the ways ActivityPub is federated.

If anything ever replaces Linux because of the vibecoding (doubtful sadly but still) I hope it's a microkernel. Microkernels just are the correct approach to designing such things.

I think the saddest part of the LLM infection of open-source software development is the loss of trust in each other. Beforehand, if somebody submitted some bad code, it could be assumed it was either a mistake or they weren't well-versed enough with the codebase. Nowadays, any code submitted by an unknown party brings immediate scrutiny and a "guilty until proven innocent" mentality. Its a valid defense mechanism, but I will never forgive the corpos for this.

I'm surprised that so many people don't know this.

I still don't really know how I feel about a lot of these LLM generated software watchlist projects listing last known untainted versions or commits of software. It seems incredibly dangerous to point users to them at all and hiding behind a "but it's for the advanced users" disclaimer doesn't really help the issue. This is especially true for web browsers, one of the single most security critical forms of software in existence.

I've been thinking a lot about how we should talk about generative AI recently and here's something I realized; focusing on the ethics of generative AI (or lack thereof) is a waste if you're not also mentioning the practical issues, ESPECIALLY the fact that legally speaking LLM code inherently makes all software licenses unenforceable because only humans can own copyright. If you're wondering why that's important, I've seen enough people have absurd breakdowns over people daring to make package scripts for, say, the AUR to realize that a lot of talented programmers are also extreme control freaks. So it might be worthwhile to mention that LLM generated output is uncopyrightable.
