for whoever needs to hear this: you're not alone. i'm not vibecoding any of the software i write. i'm writing it by hand, but i've leveled up my emacs with eglot/lsp. i'm modernizing my stacks and use languages with excellent compilers. i think about how to do more with less. i'm trying to combine the best human-written libraries and modules and assemble them with minimal boilerplate. i enjoy reading your manuals and references. i believe in robust, secure, human-written software.

The Moroccan geographer Mohamed Berriane just told me an amazing story:

About ten years ago, in Corsica, he talked to some Corsicans who had been hiking in the mountains in Morocco. On a high mountain slope, they encountered some bad weather and got lost. So they did what Corsicans do in that situation: they sang a specific song, which is known in Corsica as a call for help. And right away, some local Amazighs heard them and came to help them, because the Amazighs have the same song, which they use in the same way.

Mohamed thought this was fascinating and should be studied, but hasn't found anyone who's interested.

Code reviewing was never the most interesting thing to do. But it had one important element. That, if done right, it was knowledge exchange between the reviewer and the coder. That can be quite motivating. Helping a fellow coder to become better. Reviewing "AI" written code does NOT come with that potential reward. The machine doesn't learn the way a human does. This turns code review into a menial, fruitless task that leads to frustration instead. That's my observation and opinion.

I have a story about solar panels, science communication, and educating the public and why it's so important to show and not just tell.

A Cuban friend's remaining family in Cuba is facing difficulties like the rest of the country. Her parents, like everyone else is dealing with black outs and wanted to buy independent electricity generation. She told her parents to get solar panels (they could) but they insisted on gas generators as that's what all the neighbours are getting and it's a tech they know. She tried and tried to talk logic into them. Gas generators need gas, like the rest of the grid. They don't have any.

I want to add this woman has a PhD in a technical field and is hella smart. With all her smarts, she failed at convincing her own parents on basic science and logic. There's no gas, you can't run that generator even if you bought it. Predictably, it didn't get much use.

Fast forward to solar panels getting installed by the government, neighbours, and the ability to see the benefits,they are now installing some too. Why? Solar panels can now be trusted. Other people are doing it. It works. The other solution didn't.

We have to remember that people have fears and biases we have to overcome. As scientists, we still carry a increasingly false belief that facts will win the argument for us.

Even on something as basic and low risk as this, she struggled. It's not her fault. We need better training for scientists to communicate with non scientists too.

Address their fears. Address their values. Show, not just tell.

Facts matter less than feelings. We need to embrace this.

Busco una aplicación para android que me ahorre la tarea de andar mirando si ciertas páginas web han sido actualizadas y me avise con una notificación. Nunca he usado un gestor y muchas de ellas no tienen el símbolo RSS.
