I distinctly remember that my edition of Encarta (they released a new one every year for a while) would play a recording of Martin Luther King Jr saying “I have a dream” at bootup. The ability to browse hundreds of such historically significant little clips was considered revolutionary for personal edification. We all had a lot of dreams back then
Just a note to say that I won’t be doing much writing on Substack for a while because I am working, instead, on paid writing work. Which, unsurprisingly, I prefer. I am also not blessed with the good health and energy levels to write for money, exist in this complicated world, raise my kids in this complicated world, and write for free.
I'm at the age (decades late) where I am thinking about pensions etc. Firmly in my fairly compensated era.

People in Europe, please don't let your politicians gaslight you like American politicians do to them.
After every school shooting is never the time to talk about gun control. Making it political is somehow "disrespectful" to the innocent children shot by mad men who got easy access to deadly weapons.
Now is the time to make every heat death political. Make every death count. Scream to the rafters. Hold public funerals for victims of heat deaths. Name the perpetrators. Don't let their deaths become meaningless.
Tell their stories. Use the opportunity to tell children about the lies of fossil fuels. Build monuments. Hold vigils. Sue fossil fuel companies for wrongful death.
Whatever tools you have, use them loudly and proudly. Don't let this slide.

The John Adams mini-series on HBO is a good watch and a vivid reminder that there would no US without Boston and Massachusetts and the rest of New England, which refused to bend the knee to the British crown. Not so with some of the other colonies, which took some convincing to revilt. On the 250th anniversary of the US, Boston and New England (except those MAGA folks in NH) are still fighting tyranny. Of course the Scots liked it here. We share the same feisty political DNA . #Glasgow #Boston
