If you like HyperCard, or are HyperCard-curious, I'd like to share an early build of my HyperCard player for modern macOS, "Stacks". It runs stacks natively: no emulator, sound (with MacinTalk speech synthesis!), period-accurate typography.

There's an in-app browser for the Internet Archive's HyperCard collection, so you can explore thousands of stacks and run them with one click.

Still early days with rough edges, but I'm having fun with it. Please report bugs!

I have decided to end my project of maintaining a spreadsheet of #COVID19 studies. After thousands of hours of effort, I think the time has come to move on. The flow of studies has been slowing over the past year.

Being an Elder Millennial sucks. It sounds like I should be the deep horror written of in forbidden tomes, heralded by the last of ill omens, and brought forth in dread reckoning. Instead, all I'm able to summon is joint pain, social anxiety, and a bizarre amount of paperwork.

@johncarlosbaez Here's my plan: we tell the AI bubble investors that we're building "linear liquid-cooled distributed datacentres for edge computing" but secretly we're just restoring the #canals.

My past experience is that I have done a pretty good job estimating, which is reassuring that I'll pick reasonable amounts this time

But also I wish past-me had written down the reasoning I used so I could draw on that now instead of reinventing it…

Party food math is hard

I'm trying to work out how much of everything to get to make dishes at scales I'm not used to, and there's so much guesswork. I'm planning a thing where there's different toppings to choose from (in part to accommodate a wide variety of food needs) and this guesswork is multiplied by the number of ingredients. Plus the kids probably won't eat as much as the adults, unless they do 🤷🏼‍♀️

I mean, to be fair, they have done it perfectly so far. No Starlink collisions.

But there is a shitload of untracked, lethal debris orbiting around up there. And they are completely dependent on so many systems (like space-track.org, apparently).

And our future use of orbit is completely dependent on Starlink operating perfectly, every minute of every day, forever.
