So Fediverse, last week I was laid off by my employer, Elastic, as part of a wider reorg that made my position redundant. 7% of the global workforce was impacted, so I'm not alone in this 😢

I would appreciate boosts as I'm now looking for my next job. Preferably in community open source, but with the crazy market, a mortage and a baby I appreciate any lead.
I'm a backend engineer with strong #cloudinfrastructure , #devops and #observability skills. I spent the last 5 years working with Golang, but have previous experience with Ruby, Python, PHP and JavaScript (that shows how old I am I guess).
I'm searching remotely from Italy.

In a shocking discovery, scientific #journal finds that people work better when actually paid for it.

In the six-month experiment, reviewers who within four working days delivered a report that their handling editor considered good quality were paid £220 per manuscript.

Paying reviewers not only led to faster first editorial decisions — an average of 5.5 working days, down from nearly 38 for unpaid reviews — but review quality, as judged by handling editors on the basis of helpfulness in making an editorial decision, went up.

Cela fait quelque temps que l’une ou l’autre des applications que j’ai sur mon cell ne peuvent être mises à jour, car incompatibles avec la version OS - plus de mises à jour de l’OS depuis… longtemps.

Désormais, les mises à jour incompatibles touchent régulièrement des app de *service public* (L’Identité numérique, nécessaire pour l’accés à certains services français ; app "Montréal" - qui facilite certains accès à des services mais ne les remplace pas pour autant, donc enjeu moindre pour le moment…).

Oui, il y a des OS alternatifs ( /e/OS, GrapheneOS…) mais même eux offrent des mises à jour OS limitées - quoique plus étendues qu’Android, c’est déjà ça…

Cette obsolescence stucturelle est un problème, et l’absence de prise en compte de cet accès limité aux services publics qui en découle, un autre…

Impressive: a new law in Italy introduced in 2026 a requirement that digital payments terminals (the machines you touch your cards or phones with) be directly connected to cash registers. This apparent technicality led to an additional 5.3 billion EUR of VAT-taxable revenue base in only four months. The expected extra revenue over 2026 is estimated in nearly 3 billion EUR. This is 100% emersion of previously evaded tax, not new taxation.

It is powerful to see other arbitrarily sanctioned legal professionals acting against this outright persecution and full-on assault on int'l justice. I hope their ordeal will end sooner than mine.
I am proud my family pioneered all this, even if the cost is extremely high.

There's a spiel about job listings I regularly give to students who are going on the tech job market (an utterly miserable and exploitative experience, the way we treat new entrants to the field…seriously…ugh). The students never quite believe me when I give it, but I give it anyway — and I'll now be using this job listing as yet another piece of evidence (if it’s real, which it may not be!).

The upshot of the spiel is “job listings usually don't mean what they say, no matter how clearly they say it, and you can’t really read them literally.”
