Siedzę sobie na callu ze znajomymi, kolega opowiedział anegdotkę z życia.

Był sobie człowiek, który o mało co nie został księdzem. Ostatecznie nie poszedł do seminarium, ale był przełożonym ministrantów na parafii. Zawodowo pracował zaś jako steward w linii lotniczej.

Przygotowanie do ślubu jego znajomych. Wchodzi na ambonę, żeby wyjaśnić jak będzie wyglądała liturgia. Na co jedna z koleżanek, wykonując charakterystyczne gesty rękoma scenicznym szeptem rzuca: "nasz kościół wyposażony jest w cztery kaplice boczne. Najbliższy konfesjonał może znajdować się za Twoimi plecami".

Positives of hitting the town: meeting with a nice person, spending time together, doing anythings else than sitting ducks at home. 😊

Lately I've been confronted by how compassionless people are. Born and raised with love and safety and never having suffered beyond that which is a normal part of the human condition, they have no self-awareness when it comes to their own privilege, and they're incapable of seeing outside of their own personal experiences.

It takes actual work to allow oneself to be confronted by darker realities of other people's lives, and the majority of people refuse to do it.

You don't deserve your family and loved ones and all of the benefits that came from that any more than people like me deserved to be near-murdered and terrorised by ours. You don't deserve the happy life with your partner any more than I deserved to lose mine in that freak accident.

It’s seductive to think we’ve earned the success in our lives, but that’s just not the case. Clean water, the presence of vaccines, herd immunity, and countless other unearned benefits bless us from birth. We did nothing to earn these, they’re just there for us, as a civic grace, bestowed on us by the wealth of our forebears. You and I don’t deserve our successes any more than other people deserve being born into leprosy and crushing poverty.

Recognising one's privilege is a prerequisite to true compassion and gratitude. What people "deserve" is irrelevant.
