Toronto’s Trans March happens today, so it seems a good time to say this:
I’ve recently seen some content online — including some from a former friend — from gay people trying to effectively cut Trans folk out of the LGBT community. “It’s not the same thing” they say.
Well, duh.
Yes. Being Trans is a completely different thing than being gay. A person can be gay, or trans, or both, or neither. As a cis gay man, I have zero internal understanding of what being trans is like. It’s alien to me.
But you know what we all share? Our enemies. The people who can’t abide anything outside of their very limited view of how people are allowed to be in the world. The fundamental misogyny that is the basis of both homophobia and transphobia. *This* is what makes us one community. United we stand, divided we all end up in conversion “therapy”.
I have no respect for gays who expect others to overcome homophobia while being unwilling to work on their own transphobia.
Trying to split off trans folk from the queer herd is doing the work of our enemies for them. And it’s not gonna make the Nazis love you or keep you safe. They’ll still be coming for you next.
Community is power. And I look forward to supporting my community this weekend at Toronto Pride!
