But the English name #panda was actually applied to the red panda first, in 1821! It was apparently borrowed from the French word panda, which may ultimately derive from the Tibetan word for red panda, written in Latin characters as pho nya.

As of today I have passed 1,500. At this pace it would take me 2 months to reach the current death toll – but this number is still rising. At the end of the day this is futile. I have no idea if I’ll make it to the end. But the process itself is a prayer for the dead, a promise they will not vanish out of sight or out of mind.
Despite the simplicity of this piece, there’s quite a lot of symbolism woven into it. In my next updates I’ll explain the choice of letters and ink.
