Spicy take: While I get that ADHD is a spectrum, I absolutely reject the notion of "everyone is a little bit ADHD".

For FUCKS sake, don't conflate occasional forgetfulness with my mental disability.

Because for all the hearts and rainbows about how ADHD is a superpower, in trying to operate in this neurotypical world, having your brain operate differently to the point that you traumatize yourself trying to mask and fit in well enough IS a mental disability.

So enjoy the 4th! I know that I will.

And I will continue working to bring our imperfect country closer to our ambitious ideals.

Because I believe in us, and in our ability to overcome the woman-hating racists and their small minds, to build the world I know we can have.

If you think loving America and celebrating the 4th of July means being quiet about our racism, and not speaking about the ways that the US could be better?

Then you don't understand Democracy.

And you haven't understood, "What to the Slave, is the 4th of July?"

If you don't know who Baron de Montesquieu, or Édouard René de Laboulaye was, don't you dare try to lecture me about the US Constitution.

If you don't know who Toussaint Louverture was, don't try to talk to me about fighting empire for freedom and democracy.

You don't know what you are talking about.

The people whose ideas the Constitution is based on, were almost all anti-slavery abolitionists.

That's why these French abolitionists gave America a giant anti-slavery statue, called the Statue of Liberty, with broken chains on her feet, as a giant clue that we are starting to get it right.

I love my country. That means I love most of the people in it. Not everyone. I don't like everyone.

I protect the people in this country from those that would hurt them.

That means from the racists, sexists, transphobes, and false patriots that pretend to love America, but hate 70% of its people.

Happy birthday America! The United States was started 250 years ago today, but it was not finished 250 years ago today. Our story is incomplete.

Our Constitution is based on ideas from the French enlightenment. But we added racism to their ideas, and corrupted it.

We're still fixing that mistake.

We are the first country to ratify those brilliant ideas into a Constitution, even beating France to their own inevitable democratic success.

But we were not the first Democracy to remove anti-Black racism from their constitution. And we still have not removed that racism and anti-Blackness.
