and the cherry on top of it all was that i had to do all of that bullshit in Firefox because the combine-accounts flow just refused to load at all in Safari

currently rather annoyed at Patreon, who sent me a nastygram this morning telling me that my account was going to be locked until i merged my creator and patron accounts, which,

- i thought was already the case, but moreover
- i thought i literally deleted my creator account???

like, the last time i tried to check my old creator account (the last time i heard rumblings about them trying to do this, like last year), i couldn't even load the creator account settings page, so i thought i wouldn't have to do anything

but apparently no, all of that information, the old writeup, membership tiers, even the members i had when i deactivated it, all flared back to life when i completed the account-merge flow

which is a pain in the ass because it’s now the front page of the logged-in view, instead of a more useful view, like the membership feed or whatever

my previous job (which was also my last job pre-transition but that’s just a coincidence) involved writing maintenance and diagnostic scripts for a series of medical laboratory analyzers that had been in the market for like 15 years by that point. if you’re in the business you’ll recognize the company name but it’s not important here.

what was important was that as a result of working on these machines, the office had several literal clinical-chemistry labs with several of them set up to do QA and such. i didn’t have to go into the lab very often, but because i did, i had to take all the trainings on how to properly use the lab space. things like proper use of PPE, how to handle a sample, various types of hazards, etc.

basically, there are tiers of approaches to accommodating a hazard and ensuring the safety of the humans who need to work around them. from most- to least-effective, they are:

- physically removing the hazard to render it impossible
- substituting a hazardous situation with an equivalent, less-hazardous one
- creating a physical separation between the worker and the hazard, like a fume hood or a guard rail
- implementing a procedure or a ruleset to manage the hazard, like requiring training
- providing Personal Protective Equipment for the workers to mitigate the hazard, like hearing protection or respirators

the early items are considered better than the later ones because they rely less on the attentiveness of the workers to ensure safety. the more you can render a hazard moot, the better work you can perform without having to worry about accommodating a hazardous situation.

unfortunately the greatest programming language possible was already designed and created on some hobbyist's laptop that they didnt show anyone out of anxiety and abandoned to focus on their paid job optimizing ad reach for a sports betting platform

speaking of weird issues with games i've played recently, i'm a bit sad that a couple games i've gotten into don't run properly in GameNative on my Thor

The First Million refused to launch, or had full-screen-flashing graphics issues, until i bumped up the version of FEX (the x86-to-ARM translation layer), and even after that the game would only accept a single controller input >_> it would recognize that a controller is connected and switch the UI elements to use controller buttons, but it just wouldn't process any more input after that

separately, the demo of Batomon Showdown would launch, but something in the way it loads its data meant that it couldn't find my profile. it doesn't use cloud saves to keep track of ranks and encyclopedia completion, so there's nothing to load there. i'm assuming that it's running its own server component to handle the player matchups, and that the data is kept there, but whatever connection GameNative supplies doesn't match up to whatever it can run in regular Steam :/ i haven't tried enabling the setting to run the complete Steam client in the container, just because it makes the experience so much more awkward. so this one was a bust as well

honorable mention to another game with awkward controller support i played recently, The First Million, which at least tries and has d-pad-menu-style interaction, but there’s a baffling behavior they added where sometimes pressing Up or Down will either move you diagonally (if the target tile is empty/disabled but there’s a populated/enabled tile next to it) or just move you to the side without actually changing rows (if you’re on the edge of the play field, your cursor is on an empty tile, and there’s a single filled tile next to it)

again, fun game, and at least they have a mostly-competent controller input, but that behavior is completely baffling

anyway, BroomSweeper is a fun little roguelike puzzle game, but between a broken Mac build (that caused them to drop their claimed Mac support between me buying it and opening it for the first time), and controller support that makes me want to swap my Steam Deck into “keyboard and mouse” mode so i can at least use the trackpads, the act of actually trying to play it is, uh, not that ideal
