The pandemic isn’t over.
The pandemic isn’t being mitigated.
The sick leave is because we’re in a mass disabling event that most people are choosing to ignore.
It will only get worse.
If I could make any kind of big statement for Disability Pride Month, it would be this: I would really like to someday live in a world where disability did not need to be legible to bureaucracy.
I get why a lot of our current wins, like the ADA, are based on this legibility. But I also find myself in a reality where the things that actually disable me aren't taken too seriously by a lot of the people I know, while also having state-legible "disabilities" that I consider net positive or neutral in my life. Real dignity would probably involve caring what the actual body owner has to say about it. That lack of self-determination does feel like structural violence.
In the meantime, having a hard line between the disabled and abled populations is fictional and arguably unhelpful. It's a spectrum, with a lot of people in middle places like "needs glasses." We'd have more solidarity if "abled" people didn't see a hard wall between themselves and those with higher medical needs.

One more “Peoples of the North, hear my plea” for the Netherlands and friends today:
If you leave your child or dog in the car today while you run into the grocery store, they will seriously actually literally be dead by the time you get back.
When I lived in Virginia, they put signs up in grocery store parking lots with dog icons to remind you of this. It only takes a few minutes of a windows-closed car parked in direct heatwave sunlight to kill a toddler or a dog.
Since such heat rarely happens here, I expect a lot of people don’t realize just how serious this is.

*The app gets quieter and quicker under VoiceOver while something's playing. Kashe runs her whole day with audio on, so this is the one she feels everywhere at once.*
Here's the thing about how Kashe actually uses Earshot. There's always something playing. She's not stopping the show to check the inbox or shuffle the queue. The audio runs while she flicks around with VoiceOver, one-handed, between two clients.
And for a while that's exactly where the app dragged. Show going, and every flick came a half-beat late. The inbox especially. She'd open it mid-episode and VoiceOver would stutter, like it was waiting in line behind the playback. She figured that was the cost of doing two things at once, and learned to let it catch up.
This build keeps up. The inbox stopped quietly redoing the same work over and over while a show played, so flicking through it during playback is quick now, not syrupy. The episode, queue, and bookmark lists got the same once-over, a little less busywork on every move, so each flick lands when she expects it.
Then the scrubber, the seek bar in the player. It used to re-announce its own name every second while the time ticked, talking over itself. Now it says its name once and just updates the time in the value. She can sit on it and hear where she is without it interrupting itself.
Last one, while scrolling. Her Library is huge, we've been over that. Cover art used to get unpacked at full size right as she scrolled past, on the same thread doing the talking, so a fast flick down the list would hitch. Now the art comes in already sized for the row, off to the side, and the scroll stays smooth under her finger.
None of it is a new button. It's the app getting out of its own way while it works. For someone who never turns the audio off, that's most of the day.
**What to test:**
With VoiceOver on, start an episode playing. While it plays, flick through your Inbox. It should stay quick, not lag behind the audio. Same for the Queue, your episode lists, and bookmarks.
Open the full player and put focus on the seek bar. It should say "Playback position" once, then update the time in its value (like "12 minutes of 42 minutes"). It should not re-read its name every second. Swipe up or down still jumps 30 seconds.
Open your Library and scroll fast with VoiceOver while audio plays. The list should feel smooth as artwork comes in, no stalls. Lock screen and Control Center artwork should still look right. Earshot Podcasts https://testflight.apple.com/join/u8dj5UTr
Curious, what are we all using on Android or iOS for instant text recognition these days?
I habitually use seeing AI on my iPhone, but I'm becoming more and more frustrated with the short text feature, which seems to just utterly fail to read the useful information on most packaging now. I have my apartment organized well enough that I very rarely need to do this, so old habits die hard. But right now I have no idea whether the app, my camera, the packaging, or something else is the problem.
I did notice that when using actual AI to scan packaging, I get a lot less of the "Text is out of focus" issues when using Aira Access Ai instead of Be My Eyes.
