Remember the culture war outrage around a decade ago over the idea that statues of Confederate soldiers and slave owners should be removed? Including the far-right violence in Charlottesville in the US?

Remember the self-righteous indignation at the suggestion that displays highlighting Ben Roberts-Smith be removed from the war memorial.

Heck, Pauline Hanson recently spoke at a rally for BRS.

Now imagine the outrage that would happen if a conservative white man had a statue, and it was pulled down after being found guilty of domestic violence.

There would be screams of injustice for months or years! A dozen Murdoch columnists would work on it full time. Lengthy speeches inside and outside Parliament would follow. A thousand Facebook memes would bloom.

Political correctness gone mad, they'd claim! Woke elites rewriting history! Censorship! Free speech under attack!

And there'd probably be centrist columnists in the Sydney Morning Age (maybe Waleed Aly) writing about how maybe there should be a plaque or something that contextuslises the history.

With all that in mind.

The retired AFL player Nicky Winmar was recently found guilty of a family-violence-related offence.

For those unfamiliar with him, Winmar is a Noongar man from the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. He was the first Aboriginal person to play 200 games of footy in the AFL.

He is best known for lifting up his jumper during a game and pointing to his skin after being heckled by racist supporters.

In response to the verdict, the WA government announced it's pulling down a statue of Winmar:

Now it goes without saying that violence against women needs to end. Winmar rightly deserves to be condemned for what he did.

They're so vocal about statues of white men who do horrible things being torn down.

Why the silence about non-white men who do horrible things?

So, let's talk about 1976. At the time, I was in a "special needs" program at a school way bigger than the 2 room village schoolhouse I had been attending. The teachers at the new school encouraged all the students to write essays about the #AmericanRevolution -- the prize being a trip to Philadelphia to participate in the #Bicentennial. I managed to win the contest with a very graphic essay about #GeorgeWashington's troops in #ValleyForge (mentioning the possibility of #cannibalism -- one of my obsessions at the time, along with Zombies). Anyhow, in order to participate in the parade, we had to dress in period clothes. I *insisted* on having a boy-man's uniform (which I made in a very public interview with the local press), and I got my way! And marched with the boys/men, with the fife and drum squad and flag bearers (I played the flute). Unfortunately, I was there by myself, with no family to take photos of me. But here's a photo of the group I was part of. And bonus... I got to spend the night at Valley Forge, telling my tales of Revolutionary cannibalism!
