I turned eighteen in 1976. Becoming an adult as opposed to an immancipated minor.
I felt like I had accomplished much. Every day since giving birth to my daughter as a fourteen year old I told myself that keeping us both safe and housed for four years was my purpose.
That goal superceded all others. Success that was mine while the rest of the country celebrated 200 years of dubious unity.
Being Wailaki I understood that America didn't want my kind of person yet we survived. I would grow up in America because America was the victor who forced my surviving family to assimilate. Sort of.
Now fifty years later I celebrate the diversity of today's America. It's clear that those who want an all white country will eventually have to accept their total fail. You only need eyes to see. There is no going back.
Overcoming this current assault will mean a new beginning. The opportunity to be a better country for all.
These flowers in our garden are a promise yet to be revealed like the new America that is coming.

Ich war heute mit dem Auto unterwegs. Autofahrer hinter mir hat mich angehupt, weil ich (übrigens wenige Meter vor einem Überholverbots- und einem Achtung-Baustelle-Schild) den Radfahrer vor mir nicht überholt habe.
Kurvige Strecke, ich hatte einfach nicht ausreichend Sicht nach vorn. Aber manche erwarten sich ja, dass jede* r die Radler* innen einfach brutal schneidet und auf der eigenen Spur bleibt.

After Europe, I’m going to see a couple of friends who have passports where they’ll likely never get US or Schengen visas. I miss them a lot. I haven’t been able to see them at all for years.
In many ways, I quite like straddling different worlds: I feel equally at home in San Francisco as I would in Mumbai or Sharjah. Or Mexico City or anywhere really.
I think I have a certain kind of cultural fluency which I really like. Part of it is autism. I feel I can fit in everywhere because I don’t really fit in anywhere. I have no expectations that everyone should be exactly like me.
In many ways it feels liberating, like I’ll always be welcomed into people’s homes for a meal, but I also sometimes feel like I’m standing on the outside, like I did as a child, wondering how I should behave in order to be accepted.
I don’t struggle so much with that anymore, but part of being at home everywhere is also not having a home anywhere.
Which feels like the same thing.

Last weekend, I went looking for this structure. It's a replica of a section of the 'Sweet Track' - a Neolithic walkway in the Avalon Marshes. The original was 2 km long, and built in the spring of 3806 BCE. It's named after the peat cutter who first discovered it, in 1970.

One of my big pet peeves is when people say "people used to ..." and they describe something well-off or only wealthy people did in the past. "but nowadays people just..." and they describe something poor and broke people do today.
We don't have as much documentation of how poor people lived in the past... so in a way we don't know how poor people lived as clearly.

I’ve had a huge health setback following my move.
My level of function is half what it was before.
The hospital said they would connect me with “resources” to assist with activities of daily living.
There’s a 1.5 year wait list.
MAiD was offered in under a month.
I don’t want to die.
I don’t want to allow the government to euthanize me.
But this is eugenics I’m always talking about.
I need assistance to survive. Help with cooking & cleaning.
The supports don’t exist unless you have a ton of money.
When you try and push your body to do it yourself, you get worse.
If you end up in hospital, they suggest assisted dying.
Am I “free” to say no? Of course.
Does it feel that way when nothing else is being offered?
Not at all.
I’m being denied the support to live while “offered” death.
That’s coercion.
It’s eugenics.
The system has decided I’m not worth saving.
I’m not alone in this.
Disabled people urgently need allies and support in this fight.
And I need some home care.

When he sought a divorce, it‘s always „alleged infidelities“ eben though the wiki page also mentioned him getting involved with various actresses (But not his fault you know, they threw themselves at him! Wiki quotes his autobiography here uncritically, it‘s not like a married man would lie about that, right?)
In the end it‘s mentioned how much the American West had changed during his life: Almost all bisons gone (passive voice!).

Ich befürchte, wir haben hier hunderttausende Menschen sitzen, die weinen, schreien, toben weil sie wissen, dass dieses sog. Reformpaket die Wirtschaft nicht abkurbeln, dafür aber viele Bürger*innen ärmer und kränker machen wird. Und ich befürchte, diese Wut wird dennoch nicht sofort gebündelt auf die Straße und ins Gesicht der Regierung getragen, sondern verpufft ergebnislos in den Chats, Privatgesprächen, Foren und sozialen Medien. Hoffe ich irre mich.

BTW trying to help a sibling out I found that food aid places are only open during 9-5 (shorter hours than that, but within it).
Makes sense, they assume they're helping people out of work.
But plenty of people in work still can't afford food right now.
