People have asked for an explanation. Here goes:

Rainbows are centred on the antisolar point, the spot in the sky (usually below the horizon) directly opposite the sun. A full rainbow is a circle with an angular radius of 42°. Every part of a rainbow you can see is 42° from the antisolar point.

If the moon were at the antisolar point, it’d be full (in eclipse, even). Move it away from that point, in any direction, and less of the moon’s visible face will be lit. At 42° away from the antisolar point, the moon would look gibbous, ¾ lit. No matter which direction you moved it. Rainbows are circles, and that’s how circles work.

In Mark Ham’s photo, you can work out exactly where the sun is—behind him over his left shoulder—from both the position of the rainbow and from the phase of the moon.
