Anyways, easier said than done. On this bike the rear wheel has a direct-drive hub motor (with the new controller this should allow regenerative braking!). The motor driver and control electronics are embedded inside the motor, and they need to be removed so I can connect a cable directly to the motor phase wires and feed them through to an external controller.
The bike is an early (2011) electric cargo bike, whose proprietary electronics have stopped working. Turns out they had hardware DRM back then already, and the battery charge controller will permanently brick itself if the pack goes under-voltage even once (which isn't a big problem at all for the NiMH cells!). To get it working again you'd need to buy a whole new battery pack _and_ have its serial number paired to the controller in your bike by a repair shop that has the vendor hardware+software tool.
Anyways, that is why there's a boatload of these (bricked) bikes flooding the second-hand market for very cheap.
After much work trying to repair the battery, I've decided to rip out the control electronics and hook my own up to the hub motor. From there, it kind of spiraled and I ended up buying a buunch of new parts. Hopefully the bike should end up much nicer than when it was still new :)
Picking up parts for the cargo bike did have me load the folding bike's front rack with bigger luggage than it was probably meant to carry

New 3D printer installed in the storage room, no more noise or smells next to the desk in the office :D
First prints were some custom wall anchors that transform the wobbly storage rack into a rock solid platform.
