Alright friends, we worked to get this out today at what is for most of you the beginning of one of the hottest weeks in your region. We're used to living through temperatures sometimes as high as 126 F and often over 110 -- and we've learned a lot. Not a single one of these tips involves running your air conditioner or making expensive alterations to your home, because we understand that all of us are living through climate change with whatever resources we currently hold and nothing more.
Stay cool and hydrated, friends!

Yo fellow #Coloradoans
If you are setting off fireworks this week(end), you are a phenomenal asshole. This hot wind we’ve had for over a week now is a longer stretch than I can remember in 38 years in Colorado. It is drier than all get out. You drop one little firework cinder in the wrong place and you could kill people and burn down homes. It ain’t worth it.
Seriously though. The firefighters I work with have been on one fire after another all week. We don’t need more.
ABC7: CA farmer giving away 125,000+ pounds of nectarines amid lawsuit: 'They left me no other option'
1. I have seen some very inspiring and positive posts here today. Thank you.
2. We didn't let the rain slow us down this afternoon, nor did we let the sun burn us. We looked after each other.
3. The previous plan has been abandoned, but we have a new plan, and I'm happy with it.
Periodic unsolicited medical opinion: if you're chronically poorly and blood tests etc never find anything, consider doing a passive stand test/NASA lean test or an active stand test to check for orthostatic issues, even if you don't feel like there's a link between your posture and your wellness (I didn't at the start of my illness either).
It's relatively easy to do at home, so you might as well if you can. You might find something worth following up, or you might rule something out

Do you know anyone in Toronto?
I have a friend who is dealing with some very difficult medical issues right now. She is on the waiting list for in-home care, and in the meantime really needs some very basic food prep help
If you know anybody who might be able to donate an hour of their time, or if you have connections with community in Toronto, please let me know and I will put folks in touch
Update: She is near old town
Another update: She has a friend visiting for a couple of days who is helping. She may not be very communicative while she is regaining some strength, and coping with the heat, but she has help right now, and some excellent people have offered to step in after. We can use more!
A signal group has been set up, to coordinate support after the friend goes home. DM me if you want the link
Thank you so much!
Huh. I wonder why I’ve never seen the Elon Musk food bank, or the Musk hospital for uninsured children, or the Musk shelter for the homeless?
If you recently moved to somewhere where a wildfire can get to your home, some advice:
Have a fireproof box with your passport, mortgage docs, birth certificates, etc. so you can grab them in a hurry, but hopefully won’t lose them if you must leave them behind.
Have a go bag with a change of clothes, basic toiletries, and if possible, a few days of any key medicines you need.
Decide now that you are OK leaving everything to burn, because you don’t want to confront that as the house goes up.
If you aren’t aware, when you evacuate for a fire in the US, sometimes you are out of your home for days. The power will usually go out during that time. You may not know if you have a home for days. If you left livestock behind, you won’t know where they are. You won’t know if you have fences or water or barns.
Plan now for those possibilities. If you don’t have a trailer, what’s your evac plan for animals? Can you cut fences or open gates? Plan now. It is hard when ash is raining on you.
So, my uni women's rowing club decided to restrict membership to cis women only. In response, a new "open" division was created that anyone can compete in.
Lots of women left to join the open division instead, and now the women's club are complaining about losing their best rowers.
Be transphobic, lose support.
That's the conses of your quences, folks.
The fact that I usually don't get randomly misgendered while my son does... on a regular basis... :blob_fucking_weird_cat: :blob_cat_sip_glare: he just has kinda long hair come on :blob_cat_sip_glare:
How do I help him manage? It does seem to annoy him but I don't want him to change his gender expression to appease the cissies
I’ve had a huge health setback following my move.
My level of function is half what it was before.
The hospital said they would connect me with “resources” to assist with activities of daily living.
There’s a 1.5 year wait list.
MAiD was offered in under a month.
I don’t want to die.
I don’t want to allow the government to euthanize me.
But this is eugenics I’m always talking about.
I need assistance to survive. Help with cooking & cleaning.
The supports don’t exist unless you have a ton of money.
When you try and push your body to do it yourself, you get worse.
If you end up in hospital, they suggest assisted dying.
Am I “free” to say no? Of course.
Does it feel that way when nothing else is being offered?
Not at all.
I’m being denied the support to live while “offered” death.
That’s coercion.
It’s eugenics.
The system has decided I’m not worth saving.
I’m not alone in this.
Disabled people urgently need allies and support in this fight.
And I need some home care.

A video on how the "Aaaa they're cutting down all these peach trees in California" is mostly just.....weird reporting.
Ain't no point in using perfectly good water & fertilizer to grow fruit that ain't got a use ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
1. It was rainy off and on all day. We need the rain.
2. I had a nice, if chilly, outdoor lunch with friends yesterday.
3. My husband is alive. He had a dangerously low hypoglycemic event last evening (low 20's when the paramedics tested his blood sugar). He was taken to the hospital emergency room, but I was able to bring him home around 2:30 AM, and he's been doing OK today.
Friends, if you are in a heat wave, one of the best survival tips I know that I rarely see people talk about is getting a pet cooling mat, the kind filled with gel.
- pressure activated
- sucks heat out of your body
- last 3-4 hours
- reset in 15-20 minutes.
You can cool them in the fridge but you don't have to.
They don't need electricity. They work when the power goes out.
Great for heat emergencies & everyday hot weather use.

We’ve been pondering replacing both of our gas cars with a single used Leaf with about 130km worth of range left - enough to get my wife to Vancouver and back for her monthly face to face office days. I know the leaf has the Chadamo (apols for spelling) DC fast charging plug which hardly anyone supports now. Can the car still charge using a parking garage charger which I’m assuming is a basic level 2 doohickey? So she can top up while she’s there. Cars are money pits, especially gas cars and especially when you have two of the bastards. Hoping a cheap EV is lower maintenance.
