Today I learned that there are only three English cities with an electrical consumption greater than 200 megawatts: London, Manchester and Birmingham. By comparison, the people who want to build AI data centres here, which nobody asked for, want a supply of up to 1 gigawatt (1,000 megawatts) for each one. That’s how skewed this whole nonsense is.

if traffic law enforcement is lax (or the Roads Policing Unit is simply overwhelmed which is more likely in Metpol area) there's a two pronged risk - cyclists will ride on the pavement as there's no police officer to warn them against the practice like there used to be even in my own living memory, and they might be themselves paranoid that folk in cars are going to hoon it down the road at speed and crash into them, especially due to being distracted/not sober.
In a city like London, or indeed any urban area, bad cyclists and bad drivers are often in same peer groups, normally young men who want to claim territory and don't care about anyone else..

The reason why is not just that she lost . She saw in the 90s the long game of movement conservatives and the right wing conspiracy coming for the Supreme Court, et al. Her votes against confirmation of Alito and Roberts. Their goal of turning back the American Republic not just 50 years but to the 19th Century. "As the symphony of birdsong known as the dawn chorus draws to its annual close at the end of June, the Guardian has recreated an audio landscape from across the past 50 years to try to portray the variety and plentitude of birdsong we have lost since tens of millions more birds were in full voice. The calls and songs of a variety of species have been isolated to build an illustration of the dawn chorus, representing a year in each decade, from now back to the abundance of the 1970s.
"In April 1976, as the dawn chorus was in full swing, Labour’s Harold Wilson resigned as prime minister and James Callaghan took his place. Today, while remarkably similar political manoeuvrings are taking place, the soundscape of the #NaturalWorld is utterly changed to one of absences, omissions and loss."

One thing I keep thinking about is how maybe the last ~80 years were the anomaly. That we’re not living in unprecedented times, but rather are finally reverting back into precedented times after decades of weirdness.
I don’t think about that to sit and doom. I think about it to ask myself the question about what now. What do I do if this is the beginning of the next 150-300 years of increasing chaos? It’s easy to roll over and wait if you think it’ll be over next week. It’s also easy to roll over and wait if you think it’ll never end.
But 150-300 years is just long enough to think about in human terms without entirely despairing about it. So the question remains: what does that mean for me, for us, and what can I do about it?
