US Nazis wear masks because they are afraid of antifascist activists. It's not because they secretly believe that what they're doing is shameful or whatever else, it's because of the constant and vigilant work of antifascists. If at some point they believe they have nothing to fear from antifascists then they will march without masks.
Today, I'm reflecting on the Reflecting Pool, and on Hunter Thompson's Rolling Stone article (later reprinted in his book, The Great Shark Hunt). The chapter is titled, "The Scum Also Rises", now apropos once again. It's about Gerald Ford's unconditional pardon of Nixon's #crimes, and is also a pun on the title of Hemingway's first book (The Sun Also Rises).

So there's a Reuters photo going around of a young Black woman sitting on the DC Metro surrounded by masked white racists on their way to a march against immigrants and brown-skinned Americans. It's an award-worthy photo. But, I just point out that this young woman's safety is at risk, & I hope everyone who sees this photo understands this about where we are in our country right now. Also, she is not being "brave"; she is wearing the mask many Black women wear. I guarantee you she is scared.
