@me_valentijn @HikerGeek @ai6yr There is the 'urban heat island' effect, where all the combined thermal mass of the local area (concrete, asphalt roads, buildings, bare earth, rock, etc) store heat during the day and then radiates heat into the environment during the night. This is like a 'zombie heat', it heats up the surrounding area at night leading to compounding temps the next day as the overnight lows are kept artificially higher within the built environment.

Three main types of heat transfer are at play: conduction, convection and radiation. The radiation and convection of this thermal energy at night is that creepy warm feeling that you can feel at night off of hard surfaces and walls after a hot day.

Part of why green space and tree-lined neighborhoods are often cooler than non-treed areas. Trees and grass actually reflect heat back from having a lower 'albedo' than hardscaping.

After two years, the European Commission has found that Meta uses addictive design. Now, Meta either has to comply or risks to be fined up to 6% of their annual revenue.
But Meta will do neither. They will fight this for another few years during which they will make much more money than they might get fined in the end.

We need something like preliminary injunctions for cases where causing harm has become a business strategy!

For the benefit of those living in warmer climates, when we complain about #ukheatwave we're not trying to imply that our island's weather is hotter than yours. 🙄

We live on a damp island surrounded by water. So when it gets hot with high humidity, the heat hits different and our infrastructure doesn't really cope with it well.

Nine months out of the year our weather is grey skies and drizzly rain. Our winters have freezing temperatures so our houses/flats have 2+ layers of brickwork/insulation & double-glazed windows that open outwards to save on heating bills. Most homes don't have ceiling fans or air conditioning because it's rarely hot enough to justify the expense.

So when a heat dome descends on us due to global warming, and it goes on for more than a couple of days, our homes turn into ovens and we find ourselves living in Satan's sweaty butt crack. The only escapes are our cars (if they're parked in the shade), air conditioned supermarkets, and poo-filled waterways.
