@isaackuo @deivudesu @pluralistic American people went wrong when they start believing that private company control was a way to counter state control; when in reality, any kind of control by a monopole is bad.
It’s wild and depressing that in the space of 20 years, we went from:
“I can now share my furry fanfic or my penis puppetry show with the entire world without worrying about any government or tv channel censoring or gatekeeping me out.”
To:
“I can’t spell the word s*x, or anything a 1960s Mormon housewife might object to, must keep my no-genocide politics on the down low, and constantly beg technofascist corps to let people read what I write”
@Edent On accents I used to have a great uncle with the thickest Scottish accent I'd ever heard. He complained that he couldn't understand the news on the BBC because of their thick English accents. Made me grow up realising that there isn't a true 'proper' English (language) accent.
@Edent Do these same people ask writers from the Southern US to stop saying y'all? And actually, to their credit, US Southerners seem to do a good job of telling everyone else to adjust to their form of English, we could all learn a bit from them in that respect.
Fuck 'em, make your writing more pommie out of spite. Go full Brick Top on them (or whoever is your lode star of maximum Englishness, I wouldn't know)
@Edent i changed my android language settings to EN-CA so that i won't be immediately geofucked by way too many sites, but especially BBC and El País.
apparently, everybody loves canadians on the internet; and expect them to be plurilingual. since that little change, i can read sites in peace without weird translation prompts.
LOL at "The Wicked Witch of the TERFs".
I personally appreciate the opportunity to learn new lexicon.
🆕 blog! “This blog is written in en-GB”
Someone left a comment on my blog recently asking if I'd mind making my language more inclusive. They didn't get some of the cultural references I'd used and suggested it would be easier if I used tropes which were more globally known.
Here's the thing. No.
All my blog posts start with a simple declaration:

"Israel's 'kill first' strategy is now aimed at Turkey." Hard power is required to stop Israel.
"The power Israel lost to dictate the terms of peace on Iran, it has sought to regain in Lebanon."
"It was helped enormously by the Lebanese government, which signed away both sovereignty over its land & its duty to seek legal redress for the war crimes Israel has committed."

Never forget: UN security council (2803) effectively handed Gaza to Trump
Report: "Trump's Board of Peace claims right to confiscate Palestinian land in Gaza"
A draft resolution says the board “shall be provided, free of charge, with public premises & facilities needed for the accomplishment of the missions.”
The board is also "planning to grant itself sweeping legal immunity for its actions" in Gaza.
@joyce I remember as a kid growing up on Long Island in the 60s without AC (which I don't have here) lying on my bed with nothing over me and sweating.
I lived in Florida for a couple of years, and I'd swear you could cut the air into blocks and store it. I don't think my lungs could move that much moisture out of them now, which is why I'm grateful for being where I am.
@fluffcthulhu love the Perl 6 button. Very retro.
I am enjoying My signing session at Metropolcon @metropolconbrln

We Australia need to watch out!! Albo is as gutless as Starmer and like Starmer will sell out our PBS and Medicare to Trump.

The Trail Blazers had to have some idea of how they wanted to use the money they requested, otherwise how did they know how much to ask for? But Dundon is saying he won’t show the City Council the details until after they have agreed to give him $120 million:
‘“For councilors to make a responsible decision on this, we have to get information early enough that we’re not forced to make a yes or no decision,” Councilor Elana-Pirtle Guiney said in an interview with OPB. “We need to get that information from the Blazers and from the city administration to be able to truly represent our constituents in these conversations.”’
‘For their part, the team says they’ve shared as much information as they can with the city and elected officials — but it’s the city that’s been obstructionist. Blazers spokesperson Charles Boyle told OPB that the team isn’t able to share final architectural renderings with the city until the city agrees on a public financing plan.’

@wendynather How fortunate we are to live in a time where instead of understanding the software we use, we can just ask a chatbot to make a new version that does what we already understand. Soon we will never need to know anything, we can just wish for things and they'll happen, a perpetual future of angry toddlerhood all watched over by machines of wildly expensive, marginally competent ungrace.
It also gives a clear opportunity for the individual to disclaim specific liabilities in exercising specific freedoms, and hence the state a way to say that option must be available, if people want to choose something other than the restrictions manufacturers want to impose. If you want to sideload whatever that's fine, but specific liability protections from unvetted software are off the table. Don't like that bootloader? That's fine, but OEM isn't responsible for what happens next.
@researchfairy It's a hell of an indictment that Elsevier found exploiting academics easier and more profitable than selling guns.

Empirical evidence, international cooperation and decisive action can mitigate and advert pandemics, wow that's crazy we should write that down or something, that seems important.
