Last night in Gaza was pure terror. Constant bombing, drones and warplanes flying overhead all night. My children couldn't sleep from fear.

Life here is unbearable. We can no longer afford food or basic necessities. The economic situation is crushing us.

To the men's Australian cricket team and all men's AFL teams: go fuck off. And just when you think you have fucked off, fuck off some more. And then when you're done, fuck off into orbit and the vacuum of space. And then fuck off into the photosphere of the Sun. I never want to hear of your useless and pointless crispy corpses again.

“When refugees from newly unified Vietnam began sailing into Darwin during the 1977 election campaign, the government responded competently and soberly despite fear mongering by Labor leaders. (This is when the language of queue jumpers entered our lexicon.) When the head of the Immigration Department suggested setting up outback “reception centres” Fraser dismissed the proposal as “racist barbarism.” Instead, in league with the United States, Canada and France, Australia resettled Indochinese refugees held in camps in Southeast Asia and negotiated an “orderly departure program” for others to leave Vietnam. With fewer refugees having reason to risk the journey by boat, arrivals on Australian shores all but stopped.”
——
“ Five of the seven exclusionary clauses in the 1901 Immigration Restriction Act live on in contemporary regulations. Race is gone, but health, morality, character and financial means remain mechanisms for denying entry.”

Anyone in Melbourne/Naarm have recommendations of laser cutting services who are willing to cut pieces for prototyping?
Material preference is wood, prefferably in thick sheets (10mm+) and very thin sheets/veneer (1mm or thinner), plus 3mm stock of pretty much any material. The initial prototypes will be square ~100mm a side, with the final product being in the region of 500-600mm a side. If their equipment supports cutting/drilling blind holes, I can change the designs to not require the thin veneer.
Also, the designs are pretty simple, and at this stage just consist of circular holes of various diameters, so if there's a better way of having them made, I'm all ears. Don't suggest just drilling them myself; I don't have the space or tools to do so, and think that doing so would probably end up not being worth it for this application. Some later modifications to the design may involve adding cut-outs for other shapes of hardware, though I'm not sure if I'll go through with those ideas yet, and if so whether they will require modifications to the laser cut parts.
I'm open to interstate/international suggestions, but shipping is obviously a factor.

Too many people judge the disabled for what we do to survive.

The truth is you can’t fathom what it’s like to live in a body that’s betrayed you.

To exist in legislated poverty with no reliable help or care.

To be left by the wayside to die and abandoned by almost everyone.

People will claim to understand.

They will try and empathize.

But then they say things like “if it were really that bad you would have support”.

Or “you just have to try harder and get another doctor”.

They don’t actually listen to us.

They talk over us.

They’re utterly convinced that they know better about our suffering, and that if we really wanted to get better we could.

We simply don’t want it bad enough.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Disabled people are incredibly resourceful.

We’re surviving in a system doing its utmost to kill us.

If “wanting” to get better was all it took, no one would be chronically ill.

If support showed up whenever it was truly needed, no one would suffer.

If healthcare helped, we would be lined up at the hospital doors.

Please don’t judge what you can’t understand

Try and realize it’s your own fear and denial that makes you need to believe everything is “fixable”… because you can’t fathom getting sick and never getting better

Disability comes for almost everyone… help us build a better world

3. Okay, so what would convince you that a piece of software (often phrased here as "an AI", gah) is conscious/can feel pain/etc?

Honestly, I'm really tired of this extremely silly question, but here is my answer:

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and I am not the one making the extraordinary claim, so it is not my job to specify what the evidence should be.

Imagine if white Australians were depicted like this. An Australian Muslim man wearing a suicide bomb vest. A young African Australian man holding a machete. A First Nations elder saying he needs to stop “getting special treatment.” All AI generated. This was official campaign ad for One Nation in Victoria. In breach of our racial and religious vilification laws. Where was the universal condemnation by our political leaders and mainstream media. Nowhere. One Nation are a white supremacist, right wing extremist party & should be spoken of as such. They’re a danger to our community. They’re inciting hate crimes & making us all less safe.

Last day for the Strange New Worlds VFX team. If you need a great VFX Producer, Coords and a VFX Editor, I know some available ones.

Bummed.

Why are we (when I mean _we_ I mean Australian journalists) still pretend the Liberal and National parties, and especially One Nation are "Conservative"?

There is nothing conservative about them. They are reactionary far-right parties with no interest in conserving anything. One Nation is most definitely a Fascist party, with white supremacy and eugenics as a central policy platform.
