We are living through unprecedented trying times for research, times that increasingly look like a crepuscule, a moment of high existential danger for research communities and academic freedoms. Now is the time for academics to take a stand or go to hell after making a Faustian pact. This is my public plea to tenured colleagues consuming genAI products, for whatever stated reason, to stick […]

dropQbsd v0.3.0 is out — FreeBSD support has landed.

Qubes-style compartmentalization on the BSD family: no hypervisor, no VM images, no daemon — just native Unix users, pf, and ~2,600 lines of ksh you can audit in an afternoon. Now on one single codebase for OpenBSD and FreeBSD: no forks, no per-OS patches.

The big change is the new libexec/wrapper: one entry point that selects the right shell at runtime (ksh on OpenBSD, mksh on FreeBSD) and sanitizes the environment on every invocation. Every dropQbsd script now runs through it.

Also new: temporary firewall rules are prepended and syntax-checked before loading (no block quick shadowing), persistent tables are repopulated after every reload, update scripts refuse to run concurrently, and Upgrade RELEASE handles FreeBSD's multi-phase upgrades with a pending-reboot login notice.

Runs on 1 GB of RAM. ~30 min install. Zero lock-in.

#Fedilab has left the Google Play Store.

You can update your Google version manually using the APK files attached to the release notes.

For automatic updates shortly after the release, I recommend switching to Fedilab's custom F-Droid repository.

See how to do that in the next message of this thread.

I came to Moosonee looking forward to finding out who lives here and why. You could ask "why" of any 🇨🇦, to be fair. Today I feel like I have a bit of an idea.

We took a trip out to James Bay with Todd Rueben and learned heaps about not only traditional ways but how those have adapted and evolved with time.

I'm left feeling very impressed by this small community.

Enjoying a cool, but very quiet and pleasant evening in the northernmost Ontario 🇨🇦 town reachable by rail, Moosonee. Tomorrow, a boat trip to James Bay.

We arrived bit diasarrayed by a cell phone malfunction, but a friendly local helped us get in touch with our hosts. Turned out he was the former band CEO. Chi-miigwetch, Gary. Seems friendly is the norm here.

The work on the rail line is impressive. By next winter the whole trip up from Toronto will be by rail.

Vanta is celebrating #caturday in the apple blossoms. She's actually chasing bees, but we'll pretend she's just enjoying the sights and scents.😸

Saw @pluralistic this evening at the charming Type Books on Dundas West in the Toronto 🇨🇦 Junction district. Lovely store, but packed. I had to abandon ship to drive back home for bedtime (and before passing out from CO₂ build up) so didn't get my copy of Enshittification signed. 🙁 Next time...
