I got triggered by recent discussions about #FOSS and #LLMs. They tie into much more broad concerns I have about the communities, and so I finally caved and wrote... well, not a manifesto.

... to HashTagNotAllAI above, sans the smell, but I don't think that is fair. To be clear, I don't want those tools to disappear.

My anti AI stance isn't about tech, or not primarily about tech.

I don't like that it swallows up rainforests and produces unreliable results. Those are valid criticisms, but I actually agree that those are - in principle at least - solvable problems.

A knife is technology. I can use a knife to cut out a cancer, or to disembowel someone. This makes a knife...

Writing this up again so I can pin it: AI is literally a fascist project. Friends don't let friends use it.

Before I go into this, there are two types of responses to this that I have taken seriously so far.

One I'll call HashTagNotAllAI, which yields the obligatory "sure", but has the same smell. I'll leave it at that.

The other is that an anti AI stance also throws some assistive technology under the bus, making such a stance intrinsically ableistic. The easy thing to do is to refer...

People are social animals. We each have our different needs when it comes to social interaction, but the fundamentals are the same: we all need the safety of groups. And we all need privacy.

This seems like two contradictory requirements, and a lot of moderation discussions focus on balancing those two, and for good reason. The underlying commonality here are visibility and control.

Fascinating morning reads.

I stumbled on a thread about ableistic behaviour this morning, which was, let's say, not awesome. In my (unsuccessful) attempt to find the post triggering the thread, I came across a paper on moderation issues on mastodon, which is undoubtedly correct, but... *le sigh*

It frames the problem as both technical and social, but it misses - as most such discourses seem to - a simple psychological root cause.

I'll explain. I keep explaining this.

Police violence against protesters https://don.linxx.net/@inkorrupt/115633320909717544

A lot of Germans are posting in German about #Giessen today, and since many of our friends overseas may be confused, here's a summary:

The current iteration of the Nazi-Party, the AfD, is holding a summit in the town of Giessen today. They announced the formation of a youth org (Hitler-Jugend?). A ton of people came to protest. The police are busy protecting the Nazis, and politicians in the current government see fit to attack the protesters.

This needs international attention.

I got my wife Star Trek captain's pips. Yesterday, she wore them at work, in her role as Mission Director. One of her colleagues called out "captain on the deck!"

Space nerds. 😜 🤩

I happened to be nearby, so I'm at #GLSJV23 of @glsbank . Let's see how that goes.

I went running a bit yesterday in, well, far too long. And while I didn't really overdo it, today the muscles/tendons in the soles of my feet hurt.

It reminds me a bit of how Pratchett's described a Barbarian (was it Cohen? It may have been) as having muscles in places other men don't even have places.

I didn't know this could happen!

(Barefoot running is supposedly tougher on the suspension mechanism that is your feet/calves, but easier on the knees. Seems that is what I feel.)

Just like Die Hard is the perfect Christmas movie, Alien is the perfect Easter movie.

But I guess if you spend your life running away from introspection, then it must look like the same thing.

This is not a subtoot, by the way, but it is inspired by a joke exchange on a related topic I had.

Therapists are overloaded, and the standard response is that COVID induced isolation was hard for many people.

What if - and, I mean, that's just a *wild* idea - the real reason is that the isolation simply lets people reflect on shitty parts of their lives, and figure out they should change them?

Maybe, just maybe, it's not *the problem*, but the beginning of the healing process of pre-existing trauma.

You know, just a thought.

Tach,

Hi there,

my name is Jens; nice to meet you! (Re-#introduction for the newcomers.)

I run a tiny non-profit ( @interpeer ) with the aim of making the internet work for us people again. That means R&D into new protocols and such for the most part. We do this purely as FOSS.

I'm also into #tabletop and #rpg games, and metal music ( #MetalMittwoch ). I live with my family and tortoise in Bavaria, but I'm from up north in Germany.

Fair warning, I enjoy dad jokes and puns.

I don't recall where I encountered this phrase, but I think it should be my motto.
