Oh.

New banger by Ado.

I didn't see anyone complaining about them using awful mics. Are you people getting a better recording than the one I watched? I had trouble understanding them half the time because it sounded to me like they had cheap mics.

#Monsterdon

I'm not insane!

I'm not if he's not!

I'm not either!

#Monsterdon

Oh wow. This movie starts with a banging music track.

Ok, I have a question for those of you who have been doing this stuff forever. I'm going to finally break down and get a Bluray recorder and a bunch of Bluray discs (just plain old 25GB Verbatim discs) and start doing backups that should hopefully last a really really long time.

I need to know what sort of encryption would be best for this. Should I just put everything in 7-Zip archives with a password or what?

It needs to be something where I can still decrypt it 20 years from now without having to dig an old computer out of storage but good enough that if a rando breaks into my house and steals stuff they won't get anything. Like I'm not trying to stop a government from using a quantum supercomputer to get my stuff, but at least a rando shouldn't be able to toss it into a script.

@neatchee Whelp. GIFs are broken. Again When I click on one it says "Oops! An unexpected error occurred."

Starting to wonder if it's even worth the constant uphill battle to keep that thing working.

So I've asked before and got no response, but I think I'd like to try this again.

On my #Android phone (currently using GrapheneOS) after some period of time (I think something like ten days?) sitting on the charger it starts limiting the charge to ≈80% to better protect the battery. That's great. But it's almost impossible to get it to actually do it and it means I have to always be afraid to have my phone off the charger too long because if it drops a single percent while off the charger it resets the counter and goes back to 100% until those ten days or whatever.

I do have root access. Is there any way I can just force it to simply always limit to 80%? That's better for the battery long term and I don't need a 100% charge.

I think I'm going to have to miss out on this #Monsterdon due to sheer tiredness. :Sobbing: Someone throw in a good riff or two for me. This movie has to be good for a riff...

Wow, I just did some updates on Steam and I'm not sure if it was the game itself or Proton, but Abiotic Factor is running like 1000x more smoothly on my system. I didn't even realize it wasn't smooth before. (Like framerates were stable and high, but now that I'm playing it like this it feels like the internal framerate was low or some craziness and now it's not.)

It's too much of a pain for me to test an unlocked FPS (I have environment-wide variables so I stop getting main menus that ignore settings and run at 4000+ FPS making my GPU max out for nothing) but I bet I'd easily be getting another 100+ on top of whatever the max was before.

I think maybe it was something in Proton that changed? Perhaps WINE 11 stuff is finally making it in? Please?

@neatchee I think the GIF picker thing is broken again. I get an error that just says "500" when I type anything in the search box.

(And yes, I know there must be a leak in the insulation somewhere. I have no clue even how to find it, much less fix it.)

How is this dude STILL so inept???

EDIT: Oh yeah, this is the ending of the previous movie rehashing.

#Monsterdon

To anyone following me who doesn't already know, the #Monsterdon movie watch-together of Critters 4 is about to begin. This should be my root thread assuming I have something to say about it (unless I lose power or something I'm going to have something to say about this one...) Mute this thread or mute me for an hour or so if you don't want to see posts about what I have very little doubt will amount to a very horrible movie (I hope in a good way?)

Could someone tell me why CachyOS's Proton (via ProtonUp-QT) keeps connecting to like 500 different IP addresses even for offline stuff when it should be connecting to a grand total of zero?

I don't mean like 127.0.0.1 / ::1. I mean there's a whole host of IPs, especially in the 164.254.192.* to 164.254.199.* ranges.

Usually it pesters me with like four and then shuts up for a while (then uses a different four on the next startup of something so I can't ever be left fully alone) but today it's apparently in a bad mood and I can't hardly do anything in-game without a new popup interrupting every few moments. (Yes I use OpenSnitch.) Just in one game session I've already blocked 46 different IP addresses that it had no reason for.

Anyone have a list?

Ok, this is a dangerous question, but I still have to ask. For all you fellow #Linux users I'm looking to replace my console text editor. I am not and will not be an emacs user and I'm not a fan of vi/vim. I used nano, but really disliked it. I really enjoy tilde for the most part (though I do wish it didn't actually take over mouse selection to such an extent that I can't copy/paste from outside the terminal in a GUI) but tilde seems to be dead. The dev seems to be MIA and the packages no longer work. We can still manually build it (though it's not static and you can't move the source files after building or it quits working) but I assume eventually that's going to stop working.

Is there an editor kind of modernish like tilde but, you know, not dead and not emacs-based and a TUI?

Well, for various reasons I have decided to reinstall my OS.

I regret everything.

This is one thing where it actually doesn't matter what OS you have. At least for those of us who actually customize our systems. I guess some out there are satisfied with a stock base setup, but is that even really living? I think not.

Oh well. The pain shall now commence.

Wait, so the big bang was just some really bad fireworks and cheap explosion effects?

A lot of scientists are going to be very very disappointed...

#Monsterdon

To those that follow me, in about fifteen minutes I'll be watching the #Monsterdon movie with the rest of the group. I may or may not have a lot to say, depending on if I get into it at all and how ridiculous some stuff is (I've already seen one thing that makes me think ridiculousness is going to be... up there a bit...) so you may want to mute me or the hashtag for the next hour and a half or so if you don't want to see that!

Alternately, join us! https://timeloop.cafe/@Taweret/116156981061269458

It's on multiple streaming services, including Tubi.

Or streaming: https://miru.miyaku.media/

EDIT: Oh and you may want to mute the hashtag in general if you don't want to see a lot across Fedi.

Again: or join us 😁

Wait, what the heck? Why are we getting spy movie music???

What the actual. THIS IS NOT DOCTOR WHO!!!

#Monsterdon

So far this is the best thing I've found: https://rr-developer.github.io/LUKS-on-Raspberry-Pi/

The problem is the initial ramdrive stuff seems to work differently with the Trixie-based RaspiOS. Creating a custom one via that method doesn't seem to work right anymore. That guide is really old (relatively speaking.)

I'm aware that sdm ( https://github.com/gitbls/sdm ) can automate setting up root encryption, but A. it's designed to run on an Ubuntu-based system (it may work on Debian, but I'm currently in CachyOS which is Arch-based) and B. I still really just want to encrypt /home not root. I can do something about A easily enough, but that won't fix B.

As far as I can tell the necessary modules go to the initramfs, but it's just not asking for a password...
