"Reddit (and everyone else) faces a bleak internet without Google traffic"

https://finance.yahoo.com/technology/article/reddit-and-everyone-else-faces-a-bleak-internet-without-google-traffic-100000669.html

Reading again about referral traffic from Google trending towards zero, this time at Reddit. The problem as I understand it is that Google scrapes the content and serves it in their AI answer. You can stop them from crawling entirely (losing all referral traffic), but can't opt out of having them give away your content for you.

What if you served them an AI summary that describes the content without giving it away? For example "problem X with symptoms Y is presented and several solutions are proposed". An open weight flash model could do that for less than a penny a post. Now they know what you have but can't give it away.

Reddit has enough of the content they want that it could be a leader there. It would only work for smaller operators if "everyone" was doing it.

Any interest in throwing a ball?

Interested in boycotting Skydance after the Stephen Colbert debacle. I know that's CBS, HBO, DC Comics, Paramount, New Line, Discovery. I skimmed down the Skydance list of assets probably three times and saw something new every time. What nightmare this merger is.

Archimedes comes through in the clutch. I needed to bend the top rail frame on my daughters Subaru out about 1.5" after she rear-ended a Wrangler and their spare tire mashed in the hood. This had no business working, with an old swing set chain and 3 foot pipe, but it went laughably well.

Sleeping 2 feet from the new warming pad. Undiscovered, or not cool enough out yet?

My new hobby of rebuilding small electric bikes is paying off handsomely in... bike guts all over the living room.

Great time to think about donating to PBS and/or NPR.

Anyone going to #reinvent this year?

One example I've seen is on the Spirit Airlines site. If you open the console while the page is loaded, you'll see popovers trying to open and attempts to execute image files. The behavior stops with Ad-Block disabled. I'd be interested if anyone can reproduce this (or, fails to).

I have not clean-room reproduced this, but I've seen on two machines now that the Ad-Block chrome extension is injecting browser hijacker content. I've reported to support@ and the Chrome store. I don't know if this is a source infection or if one of the rule lists has a bad actor (are rewrites possible in Ad-Block lists?)

Sitting in the National Coney Island at DTW and they're playing early 80's Iron Maiden. Good omen for QCon NY this week.

I've never felt so betrayed by product packaging.

I think the experience would be amazing by the way, totally seamless and integrated

I just misread a headline about an Apple court case as someone needing to submit to "Apple Court", and I think this is the terrifying and inescapable future of Terms of Service.

*"I agree to submit to and be bound by the rulings of the Apple Court System"*
