They Could Not Indict the Sandwich
Sean Dunn walked up to a line of federal agents at the corner of 14th and U Streets Northwest on the night of August 10, 2025. The agents were Customs and Border Protection officers posted outside a nightclub hosting a Latin Night, part of the federal force surging into Washington that weekend. Dunn shouted at them for the better part of seven minutes. He called them fascists and racists. He chanted "Shame." "Why are you here?" he shouted. "I don't want you in my city!" Then he threw his dinner at Agent Gregory Lairmore's chest. The dinner was a Subway footlong, still in its wrapper. Dunn ran. The agents caught him. A body camera recorded what he said on the sidewalk. "I did it. I threw a sandwich. I did it to draw them away from where they were. I succeeded." What the Modem Was Saying
AOL ended its dial-up internet service on September 30, 2025. The company posted a short notice saying it routinely evaluates its products and had decided to discontinue dial-up, and that the AOL Dialer software and AOL Shield browser would go with it. The service had run for over three decades, and it taught America what connecting sounded like. Two sounds went with it: the handshake screech and a recorded voice saying you had mail. The Hairbrush
Barbara Keating was 72 when American Airlines Flight 11 carried her into the North Tower. She had spent the summer on Cape Cod visiting her grandchildren, and she was flying home to Palm Springs. On August 7, 2025, the New York City medical examiner's office gave her name back. Technicians had identified her from minute remains recovered in the trade center wreckage, matched through advanced DNA testing against a hairbrush from her home and samples from her relatives. Her son Paul told reporters that a scrap of her ATM card was the only other trace of her ever found. She was the 1,652nd person identified among the 2,753 killed at the World Trade Center. Her family has buried her beside her husband. […]"Father, we thank you for the lessons of Black liberation theology which doesn’t just remind Black folks that god loves even when white racists don’t. You have taught us to question why white recognition remains important enough to wound our understanding of ourselves in the first damn place!"

Someone has asked me why I do Electre Selecteh. This project is young and this person was the first one actually asking me this question. 🫠
I started replying with a link to https://selecteh.org/about/ but then I realized this was not really it. Then I quickly wrote:
A few bad men want to steal everything from so many millions of people. They are stealing our freedom, our privacy, our intelligence, our critical thinking, our happiness. They even steal music and want to steal musicians' creativity with automatic capitalist 1984 music for power and for profit. Creating and sharing music helps nurture connections, community, smiles, and happiness. So from all the things one could do, I want to help promote those who are being part of the solution, creating good music and sharing it in social, truly social platforms.
That's more like it. 😊
One of the things that irk me is that we don't really have a way of tracking the long-term growth and changes of the #Fediverse .
Yes, there is fedidb.com , but it only seems to track user statistics for the last 30 days. Currently, the "monthly user base" seems to over at slightly over 1.3 million, which seems more than it was last year - but we don't really have a good long-term data set.
How does the user base of the Fediverse grow? What are specific events that cause the Fediverse to grow? And what differentiates accounts that stay from accounts that eventually stop being active?
There are a _lot_ of scientific examinations of commercial social media platforms. One would think that the Fediverse, with its open architecture, would also make such analysis possible, but I am not aware of any.
I have seen two different feature-requests to add ActivityPub support to Blacksky.

My political education began in Brazil, where I lived from 1989-91. I learnt that the only defence we have is "conscientizaçao": raising awareness about the relations between exploiters and exploited, and the violence that underpins them. The Brazilians have once again demonstrated its power. ✊❤️🔥
In life and on social media, I've learned it's best to respond to hate with kind, pragmatic discussion - or not respond at all. If I can't do either peacefully, or if the whole thing is making me anxious, it's best to block, mute, and move on.
Let's respond with kindness today, because responding to hate with hate makes things worse, no matter the subject. You may not like everyone, but that doesn't give you the right to be nasty to people. That's my stance, at least, as a pacficist, without an ounce of toxic positivity. Have a nice Monday!
Is Trump gonna try to kidnap Lula now? #Brazil
