Barack #Obama, talking about Trump: "I don't know if you noticed, but he seems very focused on home renovations. He should be on HGTV," he said. “What’s up with the gold? Everything, more gold. He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory."
Drop-In Time is a time where I hang out in a room at the library with a big table and a lot of chairs and help people with their technology problems for two and a half hours. These are their stories. It was cold today so I was warming up some water for tea and by the time I got upstairs at three past the hour there were four people waiting for me. Whoops!
Bob and Kathy had a Medicare prescription drug plan that wasn't going to be around next year so they needed help finding a new one.
The Hello Stavanger conference is over. I managed to find some really excellent talks, mostly non-AI, between all the AI hype pedlers. I found a couple of anti-AI talks too, but they were a bit too much. There were also a couple of in the middle talks that were useful for work, and a really good one at the end about the dissonance of using AI. Today's best talk, though, was on the history of Typography in tech by Dylan Beattie.
This is so spot on.
I hated learning English. Did anyone else have these issues??
(Bobby Finn)
My favourite talk so far has been the talk by @david_whitney titled "Meditations on Code As Art". I hope there's a video.
Another year, another Hello Stavanger conference. There are many interesting talks, but as expected there's also *a lot* of AI stuff. Hopefully not all people pushing the slop.
finally, a private key that current quantum computers can factorize
Security personnel around the world are on high alert following the discovery of eight TLS certificates with private keys so weak they could allow anyone to mint trusted browser and app credentials for any site on the Internet.
novelWriter 2026.3 Beta 1 is available for testing.
This release replaces the old Outline panel with a brand new Story View, and adds basic support for right-to-left languages. The text editor gains simple lists, text alignment buttons, and proper Markdown links including file links. There are also new page layout options for book printing, better handling of copied projects and backups, and a refreshed set of icon themes.
Have you ever thought about how your computer adds and subtracts? It takes a lot of hardware to handle floating-point numbers like 12.34. I opened up Intel's 8087 math coprocessor chip from 1980 to see how it works...
I'm going through my favourite movies list again, and tonight's movie was Pride from 2014, and damn what a lovely movie it is. I think it resonates with me so much because it shows the kind of family a small LGBTQ community can become. I miss that feeling from the time I was more active in the community.
#WritersCoffeeClub 16. How do you feel about people reading your works without buying a personal copy?
you can read my book for free right now, if you want. it features the archangel Lucifer teaching a young woman to read, which makes it eminently bannable in fascist districts. that and the trans stuff. https://archiveofourown.org/works/62147545/chapters/158967184
it's a quirk of psychology (or perhaps only W.E.I.R.D. psychology) that people don't value things that they don't have to pay for. 'Money dignifies what is frivolous if unpaid for.' after all, how could it be any good if they're just giving it away? but i would encourage you to put aside that mercenary thinking and give open books a chance.
Fuck A.I.
"We will soon sunset the Consumer web dashboard. All functionalities are being transferred to the mobile application."
Meh 😒
SpaceX is now requesting 456 launches per year from Boca Chica https://public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2026-20963.pdf
As my colleague pointed out, that's more than the current launch rate for the world (245 launches so far this year according to https://orbitalradar.com/satellite-launch-log), from a single site that was sold to the public as a testing and development site.
Everyone needs to see this and also acknowledge why reverse engineering is a super power.

Guy reverses the dark patterns of mobile apps and publishes it, absolutely love it!
I assume his motivation here is to inject himself into the history of the technology without actually having had anything whatsoever to do with it. It seems to be how his immense personal insecurity and ego presents itself.
