Interested in contributing to FreeBSD but not sure where to start?
For FreeBSD Foundation intern Nimish Jain, it started with curiosity and a desire to better understand how large, complex pieces of software work together.
Read our intern spotlight to learn more about Nimish’s experience and his advice for students and new contributors interested in getting involved:
In this Q2 2026 FreeBSD Journal article, Tom Jones sits down with FreeBSD developer Baptiste Daroussin to discuss the evolution of packaging in FreeBSD, the development of NuageInit, and how the Project has progressed since his 2018 talk, “The FreeBSD Project: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.”

Inspired by @klarainc's excellent video on FreeBSD hardening, I've put together a beginner's guide expanding on their walkthrough.
The goal is to break down the concepts and make these practices approachable for anyone looking to get started:

Manpage Monday: bastille console
Need a shell inside a jail? Step right in.
Console into myjail
> bastille console myjail
Enter as a specific user
> bastille console myjail bob
Jail stopped? -a starts it first, then drops you in:
> bastille console -a myjail bob
See `man bastille-console` for more details.
dropQbsd porting from OpenBSD to FreeBSD almost complete: testing phase now. Same scripts run on both systems. mksh adopted for full BSD portability. Next challenge: include NextBSD.
The philosophy stays the same: few lines of code, no virtualization, dead-simple configuration. Compartmentalization without virtualization, built on BSD primitives. Most threat models, minimal attack surface.

Call for Testing: MediaTek Wi-Fi Support
Support for additional MediaTek Wi-Fi cards is now available for community testing.
If you have an MT7920 or MT7922 wireless card (including the AMD RZ616), we'd appreciate your help testing the latest work and sharing your feedback. Please note that MT7925 is not included in this round of testing.
